Gary's decision to quit teaching and stay at home with his new baby causes a conflict between him and his mother, who disapproves of his choice of not returning to work and becoming a "househusband." Gary's father wanted him to "grow up" and become a lawyer, but Gary remembers how distant his father actually was, and doens't want to make the same mistakes.
