  • February 2, 2012

In this episode of This Old House Hour, the team continues working on the Barrington Project - a renovation of an old colonial home in Rhode Island. The episode begins with host Kevin O'Connor checking in with contractor Tom Silva, who is working on repairing some of the home's drywall. Silva explains that they have had to take down some of the walls in order to insulate them properly, and now they are putting up new drywall.

Next, Kevin meets up with homeowner Amy, who takes him on a tour of the home's new kitchen. The kitchen was designed by interior designer Amanda Reid, who incorporated a number of modern features into the space while still maintaining its colonial charm. The kitchen is now open and bright, with new cabinets, a large island, and stainless steel appliances. Amy is thrilled with the results.

Later in the episode, Kevin checks in with electrician Heath Eastman, who is installing a number of new lighting fixtures throughout the home. Heath explains that the owners wanted the ability to control the lighting levels in each room, so he has installed dimmer switches and other controls. He shows Kevin how each fixture can be operated from a mobile app, making it easy to adjust the lighting throughout the day.

As the episode progresses, the team works on a number of other projects throughout the house. Carpenter Norm Abram installs new baseboards and crown molding, while HVAC specialist Richard Trethewey works on installing some new ductwork in the basement. The team also works on painting the exterior of the home, as well as installing a new fence around the property.

Throughout the episode, the team emphasizes the importance of preserving the historic character of the home while still making it livable for modern times. This is especially evident in the new kitchen, which features modern appliances and finishes but still manages to look like it belongs in a colonial home.

The This Old House Hour team also offers a number of tips and techniques for viewers who may be working on their own home renovations. For example, they show how to use a chalk line to mark where to cut drywall, and how to cut a return on crown molding.

Overall, the Barrington Project, Part 2 is a fascinating look at the renovation of an historic home. From the new kitchen to the updated lighting, the team has managed to maintain the charm of the home while still bringing it into the 21st century. This episode is sure to be a hit with fans of home renovation shows and history buffs alike.
