This Old House Hour Season 10 Episode 20 Barrington Project, Part 4

  • February 16, 2012

In season 10 episode 20 of This Old House Hour, we continue our tour of the Barrington Project, a beautiful 1920s Victorian home that is getting a complete renovation. In this episode, we focus on some of the finishing touches, as well as some of the challenges that the team still faces as they work to complete the project.

We start with a visit to the second floor, where general contractor Tom Silva is working on the new stairs and railing. The stairs were custom-built off-site and brought in for installation, and they fit perfectly into the space. Tom walks us through the installation process, pointing out some of the unique features of the staircase.

Next, we move on to the master bathroom, where designer Kathy Marshall has been hard at work on the tilework. She shows us some of the different tile patterns she's been using, including a herringbone pattern on the shower walls and a hexagonal pattern on the floor. Kathy says that the tilework is one of her favorite parts of the project, and it's easy to see why – the finished result is absolutely stunning.

Meanwhile, downstairs in the kitchen, Tom Silva is working on installing the new range hood. This is a custom-built hood that was designed to match the kitchen cabinets, and Tom says that getting it installed properly is important for both function and aesthetics. We watch as he carefully measures and cuts the sheet metal, then installs it and attaches the hood to the ceiling. It's a challenging job, but Tom makes it look easy.

One of the challenges the team is still facing is figuring out how to deal with the roof over the front porch, which was badly damaged and needs to be replaced. Carpenter Nathan Gilbert is working on a solution, and he takes us up onto the roof to show us some of the issues he's dealing with. It's a tricky problem, but Nathan is confident that he can come up with a solution that will look great and hold up over time.

Finally, we get a tour of the finished basement, which has been transformed from a dark and dingy space into a bright, functional living area. Designer Kathy Marshall shows us some of the features of the space, including the new fireplace and the built-in bookshelves. She also points out some of the challenges of finishing a basement, such as dealing with moisture issues and making sure everything is properly insulated.

Throughout the episode, the team takes time to reflect on some of the challenges they've faced over the course of the project, as well as some of the triumphs they've experienced. It's clear that they all take great pride in the work they're doing, and they're excited to see the finished house.

Overall, season 10 episode 20 of This Old House Hour is a fascinating look at the complexities of home renovation, as well as a celebration of the dedication and hard work of the team behind the Barrington Project. Whether you're a DIY enthusiast or just a fan of beautiful homes, this episode is not to be missed.
