This Old House Hour Season 9 Episode 10 Auburndale Project, Part 10 of 16

  • December 9, 2010

In the tenth episode of season nine of This Old House Hour, viewers are taken back to Auburndale, Massachusetts, where the team continues to work on renovating a craftsman-style home built in 1915. This episode marks the halfway point in the sixteen-part series following the renovation.

As always, host Kevin O'Connor begins the episode by checking in with the team to see what progress has been made since the last installment. He starts with general contractor Tom Silva, who gives an update on the new foundation that they've been working on for several episodes. Tom explains that they had to excavate the perimeter of the house to install new footings and a concrete wall that will support a new addition to the home. He notes that the old foundation was in such bad shape that it had to be completely removed and replaced, which has added some time to the project.

Next, Kevin speaks with master carpenter Norm Abram, who is overseeing the renovations to the home's original windows. He explains that they are replacing the old, single-pane glass with new, double-pane glass to improve energy efficiency without sacrificing historical accuracy. Norm shows off a few different techniques for caulking and sealing the windows to make sure they are airtight.

The episode then shifts to electrical work, as electrician Allen Gallant shows Kevin around the home's new electrical panel and explains the various circuits and breakers. Allen also shows Kevin how to install a new outdoor light fixture, explaining the importance of grounding and securing the wires properly to prevent any hazards.

Finally, Kevin checks in with homeowner Emily and designer Carole Freehauf to see how they are coming along with the finishes for the home. Carole shows off some of the tile and countertop options they are considering for the kitchen and bathrooms, and Emily talks about her excitement for finally being able to see the design elements coming together.

Throughout the episode, viewers are treated to footage of the home's exterior and interior, showing the progress that has been made thus far. As always, the team at This Old House Hour blends historical accuracy with modern technology and design to create a home that not only looks beautiful but is also energy-efficient and comfortable to live in.

Overall, the Auburndale Project, Part 10 of 16, is a great installment in this ongoing series and will leave viewers eagerly anticipating the next episode. Whether you're a fan of home renovation shows or just appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of early 20th-century homes, This Old House Hour is a must-see program that never disappoints.
