- March 17, 2011
In This Old House Hour season 9 episode 24, titled "Los Angeles Project, Part 8 of 10," the team continues their journey to renovate a 1930s Spanish Colonial-style home in Los Angeles. In this episode, the focus is on the exterior of the house, where the team tackles the landscaping and hardscaping of the property.
Host Kevin O'Connor meets with landscape contractor Alan Block to discuss the plans for the front yard. They decide to create a new pathway from the sidewalk to the front door using pavers and install a new fence that will match the style of the house. Further, they install a new irrigation system and select plants that will thrive in the Southern California climate, such as Australian tea trees and succulents.
Meanwhile, general contractor Tom Silva and carpenter Jeff Sweenor work on repairing the original wooden windows on the front of the house. They remove the old putty, replace any damaged glass, and repaint the frames to match the existing color. They also add new window locks and hinges to improve functionality and security.
Back inside the house, plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey works on installing a new hot water recirculation system. This system will provide almost-instant hot water to all the fixtures in the house, eliminating the need for a homeowner to wait for hot water in the shower or sink.
Finally, Kevin meets with homeowner Brett Jackson to discuss the plans for the backyard. They decide to keep the existing pool but update the surrounding hardscape by replacing the tile and plaster and adding new pavers around the pool. They also decide to add an outdoor kitchen area with a grill and sink, making the backyard area perfect for hosting parties and entertaining guests.
As the episode comes to a close, the team has made significant progress on the exterior of the house, taking it one step closer to the final reveal of the completed renovation project.
