Time Team Season 9 Episode 10 A Lost Roman City, Castleford
- July 4, 2009
In this episode of Time Team, the team travels to Castleford, a town in West Yorkshire, to uncover the remains of a lost Roman city. Roman artifacts had been discovered in the area in the past, so the team was excited to delve deeper into the history of this location.
Before the team began their excavation, they met with local historians and archaeologists to gather as much information as possible about the area and its possible Roman origins. From there, they strategically chose three different sites to excavate - a field by the River Aire, a known Roman road, and a local pub known for its strong Roman connections.
At the first location, the team set their sights on what they believed was an ancient Roman river dock. The area was challenging to excavate due to the proximity to the river and the waterlogged soil, but the team persevered and found some amazing Roman artifacts, including pottery, coins, and a Roman hairpin.
The team moved onto the second location - a Roman road that had been previously discovered. The road was believed to have been an important trade route that connected the Roman city with coal mines, and other industries in the area. As they carefully uncovered the ancient road, the team discovered the remnants of several Roman structures as well as tools and everyday items used by the inhabitants of the city.
Lastly, the team made their way to the pub, which was believed to have once been a Roman bathhouse. The pub was an ideal location for Romans to gather, as it was situated at the crossroads of several important Roman roads. With the help of ground-penetrating radar and careful excavation, the team discovered the remains of the bathhouse, including an apodyterium (a changing room), a caldarium (a hot room), and a frigidarium (a cold room).
Throughout the episode, the team's progress was hampered by the ever-changing weather conditions, but their persistence paid off. In the end, the team uncovered a wealth of Roman artifacts and structures that gave them a glimpse into the lives of the people who lived in Castleford almost two millennia ago.
As always, the team's hard work and dedication paid off as they uncovered exciting new information about the history of Castleford. This episode of Time Team is a fascinating look at how archaeologists and historians work together to uncover the mysteries of the past and to preserve history for future generations.
