Ep 8. Johnson vs. Moraga

  • July 27, 2013

The eighth episode of UFC on FOX's first season focuses on the highly anticipated flyweight championship bout between reigning champion Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson and challenger John Moraga. Johnson, considered by many to be one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters in the sport, enters the fight with a perfect 3-0 record in title defenses, having defeated top contenders Joseph Benavidez, John Dodson, and Ali Bagautinov.

Moraga, a former NCAA Division I wrestler, also comes into the fight with an impressive record, including a recent submission victory over No. 3-ranked flyweight Sergio Pettis. However, he is considered by many to be a significant underdog against Johnson, who is known for his lightning-fast footwork, precision striking, and exceptional grappling skills.

Leading up to the fight, both fighters display confidence and respect for one another in interviews and press conferences. Johnson acknowledges Moraga's strength as a grappler, but states that he is prepared for any scenario and plans to keep the fight standing. Moraga, meanwhile, expresses his admiration for Johnson's skills but insists that he is not intimidated and believes he has the tools to pull off the upset.

The undercard for the event features a number of other compelling matchups, including a featherweight bout between rising star Cub Swanson and former WEC champion Chad Mendes, a welterweight fight between veteran Robbie Lawler and up-and-coming striker Bobby Voelker, and a lightweight contest between Jorge Masvidal and Michael Chiesa.

As the main event approaches, anticipation builds among both the live audience and viewers watching at home. UFC commentators Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg provide expert analysis of the fighters' strengths and weaknesses, as well as insights into their respective game plans.

Once the fight begins, it quickly becomes apparent that Johnson's speed and technical skill are too much for Moraga to handle. Johnson consistently lands crisp strikes and evades Moraga's grappling attempts, frustrating the challenger and earning the respect of the crowd. Despite Moraga's tenacity, Johnson dominates the fight and ultimately secures a submission victory in the fifth round, cementing his status as one of the greatest champions in UFC history.

As the event comes to a close, Rogan and Goldberg reflect on the significance of Johnson's victory, praising his technical skill and predicting that he will continue to dominate the flyweight division for years to come.
