Underground Railroad: The Secret History Season 1 Episode 4 Setting Sail for Freedom

As runaway slaves make their way across the treacherous waters of the Ohio River, a group of abolitionists led by John Parker works to ensure their safe passage. Meanwhile, Levi Coffin, known as the “President” of the Underground Railroad, makes a daring journey back to his former home in North Carolina to rescue his family. Pursued by henchmen working for his slave-holding father-in-law, Coffin navigates dangerous terrain in a bid to reunite with his loved ones and bring them to safety.

In Canada, abolitionist and former slave Henry Bibb faces new challenges as he establishes a school for Black children. Despite encountering opposition from both white supremacists and Black leaders who oppose his progressive teachings, Bibb remains committed to providing education and support to those who have suffered under slavery.

Through these intertwined narratives, “Setting Sail for Freedom” explores the complex network of individuals who worked tirelessly to help enslaved people escape to freedom. From the ordinary citizens who bravely provided shelter and food along the journey to the well-known figures like Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass, this episode paints a vivid picture of the Underground Railroad and the heroic efforts of those who fought against slavery.
