Born in 1904 in Waycross, Georgia, Sonora was raised in a family of horse trainers and grew up surrounded by horses. When she was just a teenager, Sonora met William "Doc" Carver, a famous horse trainer and performer, and soon became his apprentice. She started working for his show and eventually became one of the few women in the world to participate in his famous horse diving act.

Horse diving was a popular attraction in the early 20th century and involved a rider and horse diving from a height of over 40 feet into a pool of water. Sonora was a natural at the sport and quickly became the star performer in Carver's show, even after she lost her sight in a terrible diving accident.

Despite suffering permanent blindness, Sonora refused to quit performing and spent the rest of her career as a blind horse diver, jumping from incredible heights into the water below. Her courage and determination earned her much-deserved fame and recognition, and she became an inspiration to many.

Apart from her work in the circus, Sonora was also an advocate for the blind and used her platform to raise awareness about their needs. She created a program called "Seeing the World Through the Eyes of the Blind" and traveled extensively, teaching people about the difficulties faced by those with visual impairments.
