In the series premiere of Watchmen, titled "It's Summer and We're Running Out of Ice," viewers are immediately transported to a world where superheroes are outlawed and wearing masks is illegal. The year is 2019, but this reality is vastly different from ours. Racial tensions are high, and the police force is on the brink of collapse due to the rise of a dangerous white supremacist group known as The Seventh Kavalry.

The opening scene of the show depicts the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, a horrific attack on a prosperous Black community in Oklahoma by white mobs. This historical event sets the tone for the entire series. As viewers are introduced to the main characters, it becomes clear that all of them are struggling with the legacy of racism and systemic oppression.

One of the main characters is Angela Abar (played by Regina King), a Black police officer who is one of the few remaining officers on the Tulsa force. Angela is also a vigilante called Sister Night, who wears a black and white mask to conceal her identity. She is pulled into the investigation of a murder that appears to be connected to The Seventh Kavalry, and begins to unravel a conspiracy that goes deeper than she could have imagined.

Another important character is Judd Crawford (played by Don Johnson), the police chief of Tulsa. Judd is a close friend of Angela's, but it becomes clear that he has some secrets of his own. As the investigation unfolds, Angela begins to suspect that Judd is not who he seems to be.

The episode also introduces us to a number of other characters, such as Laurie Blake (played by Jean Smart), a former superhero who now works for the FBI, and Adrian Veidt (played by Jeremy Irons), the wealthy and eccentric creator of the original Watchmen team. These characters will all become important pieces of the puzzle as the show progresses.

Throughout the episode, we see flashbacks that shed light on moments from the characters' pasts. These moments are often interconnected, providing clues to the larger mystery at hand. As Angela investigates the murder, she begins to realize that she may be facing something much larger than just a rogue group of white supremacists.

"It's Summer and We're Running Out of Ice" is a show that is not afraid to tackle complex themes and ideas. Issues of race, justice, and ethics are woven throughout the episode in a way that feels both timely and timeless. The show is visually stunning, with expertly crafted cinematography that drives home the weight of the story being told.

Overall, the first episode of Watchmen sets up a gripping and intense story that is sure to captivate viewers. It is a show that challenges our assumptions and beliefs, and asks us to consider the world in a different way. With great performances and a carefully crafted script, "It's Summer and We're Running Out of Ice" is an excellent start to what promises to be an unforgettable series.
