East of Eden is the second episode of the second season of the documentary series Wild Russia. This episode focuses on the wildlife and natural wonders of the Far East region of Russia, which is a vast and remote area that extends from the Ural Mountains in the west to the Bering Strait in the east.

The episode begins with a stunning aerial view of the Kamchatka Peninsula, a volcanic region that is home to over 200 volcanoes, including some of the most active in the world. We see the lava flows, ash clouds, and steam vents of the Klyuchevskaya and Tolbachik volcanoes, as well as the snow-capped peaks of the Sredinny Range. We also see the rivers and lakes that are fed by the melting snow and glaciers, such as the Kamchatka River and Lake Kurile.

Next, we meet the Kamchatka brown bear, which is one of the largest and most powerful bears in the world. We follow a mother bear and her cubs as they forage for salmon in a river. We see the cubs learn how to fish and how to avoid the aggressive males that also want to catch the fish. We also learn about the conservation efforts that are being made to protect the bear population, which was severely depleted by hunting and poaching in the past.

We then turn our attention to the sea otter, which is another iconic species of the Far East region. We see the otters floating on their backs in the waves, cracking open shells with their teeth, and grooming their dense fur. We learn about the important role that the otters play in maintaining the kelp forest ecosystem, which provides habitat and food for many other marine species. We also learn about the threats to the otter population, such as oil spills and overfishing, and the efforts that are being made to prevent such disasters.

Moving inland, we explore the taiga forest, which covers a vast area of the Far East region. We meet the Siberian tiger, which is one of the rarest and most elusive predators in the world. We follow a female tiger as she hunts for prey, such as elk and wild boar, and marks her territory with scent. We also learn about the challenges facing the tiger population, such as habitat loss and poaching, and the measures that are being taken to protect and study the tigers.

Finally, we visit the tribal peoples of the Far East region, who have lived in harmony with the natural world for thousands of years. We meet the Evenki people, who follow a traditional way of life that involves hunting, fishing, and reindeer herding. We see how they make their clothing, tools, and shelter from the materials found in the forest. We also learn about their spiritual beliefs, which are based on a deep connection to the land and the animals that inhabit it.

Overall, East of Eden is a breathtaking journey through one of the most remote and beautiful regions of the world. The episode showcases the diversity and resilience of the wildlife and people of the Far East region, and highlights the importance of protecting and preserving this unique and valuable ecosystem.
