For over a week, 66 teams of endurance athletes have suffered through the grueling conditions of the "World's Toughest Race." They have pushed themselves to their physical and emotional limits in their quest to finish the 671 kilometer course. For 29 teams there are still 3 more days of racing to go before the final cutoff. In the predawn mist, Fijian Team Tabu Soro emerges from the icy waters above Vuwa Falls, but one team member has suffered a fall that puts the entire team's race in doubt. Farther ahead, Team Curl struggles with equipment issues during the mountain biking, but one racer shares his personal motivation to push on. As Team Costa Rica finishes the mountain biking, they must rally around one teammate who breaks down from the suffering. Facing a difficult navigation, a group of teams decide to band together on Leg 4 to ensure they stay ahead of race cutoffs. On Day 10, a hidden injury of a member of Team Flying J worsens, and his team captain is forced to make a difficult decision. As Team True North tackles the rappel to retrieve the race's final medallion, father and daughter teammates are grateful for the time spent together. Speeding toward the coast on their mountain bikes, Team Curl suffers a sudden crash brings their race to an abrupt and emotional end. Rescue boats scramble as Team New Zealand is floating helplessly in the middle of the open ocean. Race management retrieves them and brings them to a nearby island - offering them a new canoe should they choose to continue racing. Meanwhile, Team Canada Adventure has launched their outrigger and is rapidly closing the gap. Back on the mainland and trekking towards Camp 3, Team Endure stops to rest for the night as Mark Macey's back pain becomes unbearable. Making their way to Vuwa Falls, Team Atenah Brasil is hoping not to repeat their mistakes from past races. Team New Zealand receives their new outrigger and rejoins the race, not knowing where the other lead teams might be. Host Bear Grylls waits at the finish line on Mana Island and congratulates Team New Zealand when they arrive first pre-dawn on Day 7. Team Atenah Brasil wakes up suffering from an array of injuries, but they opt to continue racing. In the early morning hours, Teams Canada Adventure and Gippsland Adventure arrive at the finish, placing 2nd and 3rd. Back on Leg 3, Team Stray Dogs is falling farther behind as a teammate suffers debilitating stomach pain. For Team Endure, their pace has slowed as well and even though they have moved past Camp 3, they discuss whether continuing is in Mark's best interest. In the medical tent hight above Vuwa Falls, Team Atenah Brasil decides that their injuries are too much, and can no longer continue racing. Trailing Teams - Iron Cowboy and Khukuri Warriors slip and slide on the treacherous trek before Vuwa Falls. The jungle conditions have left several members of the Japanese Team East Wind with trench foot, and they must be airlifted from the course. Faced with the daunting task of ascending Vuwa Falls, Travis from Team Endure realizes that his father's race is over and pulls their team off the course with an emotional farewell. Falling too far behind, race management informs Team Stray Dogs that their race is over as well. At Camp 3 the two teams reunite.

Team Summit waits while teammate Fran continues to be treated for hypothermia, not knowing how they will be able to continue. Team New Zealand maintains their 1st place standing arriving to Camp 4 and as the morning of Day 6 breaks, they depart on mountain bikes to begin the final leg. Just a few hours behind, the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place teams make it to Camp 4 - in hot pursuit of the Kiwis. After a frustrating night of being lost, Team Bend Racing wakes up with a renewed positive spirit and continues on. Team Khukuri Warriors enjoys the beauty of the white-water rafting, though for Team Able Abels the ongoing wear and tear of the race is taking its toll. Team Stray Dogs is feeling their age as they suffer through the muddy mountain bike section. Farther ahead, Team Endure is midway through the trek to Camp 3 and continues to progress, despite Mark Macey's deteriorating condition. Team Summit member Fran has recovered enough to continue racing, but the experienced Spanish team have fallen to 10th place after being among the leaders for the first 5 days. At the top of Vuwa Falls, Team Bend Racing takes time to reflect on their families and life outside of the race. Race leading Team New Zealand retrieves the 5th and final race medallion after rappelling down the face of a 60-meter waterfall. With Teams Canada Adventure and Gippsland Adventure continuing to push, the front-running Kiwis hope they can finish the race during the night. Far back on the course and stuck in another Fijian rainstorm, the Abel daughters emotionally decide to end their race. As night falls, Team Mad Mayrs and Team Khukuri Warriors join forces on the long trek to Camp 3. Travis Macey becomes increasingly concerned with his father Mark's condition and convinces him to travel on horseback during the night. With only a few hours of open ocean kayaking until the finish line, Team New Zealand is forced to make a surprise "mayday" call that will potentially change the outcome of the race.

For veteran Team Bend Racing, their recovery from the Day 1 setback continues, although another team member is now suffering from a previous injury. While the other teams rest and wait until morning to depart, Team New Zealand makes a bold decision to tackle the dangerous rope climb on Vuwa Falls in the darkness of night. Farther back, slower teams like Team Able Abels, Team Khukuri Warriors, and Team Onyx are just arriving at Camp 2. Last place Team Stray Dogs also arrives, looking forward to some much-needed rest. At 6 AM, the white-water rafting reopens and Team Atenah Brasil is the first to hit the rapids, recalling the memory of a fallen teammate as inspiration. As teams begin to depart Camp 2 on mountain bikes, Team Costa Rica shares their positive outlook on life and racing. As signs of fatigue begin to show, Team Onyx is anxious to tackle a lengthy trekking section on the next leg of the race. For Team Able Abels, team captain Dan Abel has to balance the responsibility of being a father with being an effective teammate, something he does not take lightly. Making slow progress on the bikes is Team Khukuri Warriors, whose inexperience with mountain biking is beginning to show. High up on Vuwa Falls, Team New Zealand continues to ascend but are beginning to show signs of exhaustion, as the rested teams - Gippsland Adventure and Canada Adventure begin to make up ground in the daylight. Team Costa Rica approaches the white-water rapids, but one teammate is haunted by a traumatic kayaking accident from her past. The final team to leave Camp 2 on mountain bikes is Team Onyx, but they do so with renewed confidence after overcoming earlier setbacks in the race. Rookie team Team Mad Mayrs grow frustrated dealing with the muddy mountain biking, but for Team Endure it's an opportunity for father and son to bond and share their positive outlook on life. While mountain biking, Onyx team captain Clifton falls behind the rest of the team, but as nervous teammates return to find him, they make an unsettling discovery.

Departing first from camp 2, Team New Zealand leads the field as they arrive in darkness at the white-water rafting put in. Here they will be held until they can safely start in the morning, allowing all of the other front running teams to catch them. Team Bend Racing continues to recover and improve from their early race heat exhaustion and arrive at Camp 2 feeling stronger. Guatemalan Team Hombres d' Maize is desperate to replace a broken bike part, otherwise they will be forced to drop out of the race. Team Onyx and Team Khukuri Warriors build Bilibili rafts with the help of locals and plot their course downriver. Not far behind, last place Team Stray Dogs struggle to find a checkpoint in the darkness. At 6 AM the river rafting section opens and the front-running teams all push hard to conquer the white-water rapids in Leg 3. Determined to make a push to return to the top of the pack, American favorites - Team Out There become mired in the thick, sticky mud from the recent rains and are relegated to pushing their mountain bikes, falling even farther behind. Back at Camp 2, Team Hombres d'Maize gets some welcome news when they are informed that a recently disqualified team is loaning an unused bike to them, saving the Guatemalans from disqualification. Bear Grylls takes some time to talk one-on-one with Team AR Georgia, including one of the youngest competitors on the course. Many of the slower teams are making their way downriver on Bilibili rafts, which are in constant need of maintenance and repair. Far ahead at the front of the race, lead teams finish white-water rafting and begin a daunting 45 KM trek and navigation through dense Fijian jungle, heading into Camp 3. Some teams utilize locals for help, and Team Summit hires a local horse to carry supplies, which ends up being a costly mistake. The lead teams arrive to Camp 3 and begin to gear up for the most challenging section of the entire course, a punishing rope climb up the dangerous Vuwa Falls.

Late into Night 1 - Team Bend Racing, who were almost forced out of the race from heat exhaustion, manage to rally together and continue on. The pack of front-running teams sets a blistering pace, paddling through the darkness as they return to the main island of Viti Levu. Team Iron Cowboy fumbles as they retrieve the Ocean Leg Medallion, leading a team member to become frustrated. Slower teams continue their way up, over, and around the dangerous volcanic island trek in the humid conditions, including father and son Team Endure, who are hoping to reunite with Mark Macy's former teammates, Team Stray Dogs - the oldest team in the field. Teams returning to the main island switch disciplines to Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP). Struggling with nighttime navigation, Team Unbroken decides to rest and wait for daylight before continuing their trek. As Day 2 begins, lead teams finish the SUP portion of the Ocean Leg - with one experienced team falling hours behind after making a critical river navigation error. Team Unbroken tries to make up time on the island trek, but their past physical injuries hamper their progress and put them in jeopardy of missing the Day 3 cutoff. The lead pack of teams arrive at Camp 1, reuniting with their assistant crews and taking a brief respite and refuel before beginning Leg 2 - the Jungle Leg. The Iron Cowboy team captain has an emotional breakdown after suffering on the open ocean. Two rookie teams are forced to quit the race after a fast-moving tropical storm threatens their safety. As the storm begins to pummel the island interior, one section of the racecourse becomes impassable, trapping Team Estonian Ace in a steep canyon facing rising waters. Race Management is forced to temporarily shutdown the course as they mount a rescue attempt of the trapped Estonians.

Host Bear Grylls flies over the picturesque but rugged terrain of the island nation of Fiji, introducing the arena for this year's "World's Toughest Race: Eco Challenge Fiji." Bear welcomes the 66 teams and explains some of the basic rules before releasing them to their four-man indigenous canoes. As the expedition begins, chaos ensues as several teams capsize their boats, including returning Eco Challenge champions - Team New Zealand. They right themselves and continue on their river paddle to the open ocean, passing several teams along the way. The first all African American team - Team Onyx is introduced and explains their motivation for competing. A top US team from Oregon, Team Bend Racing is the early leader, setting a fast pace in the ocean paddle that only a few teams can maintain. Farther back in the field, there are several rookie teams competing, including Team Unbroken - comprised of wounded military veterans, Team Khukuri Warriors - a team featuring twin sisters and mountaineers from India, Team Endure - a father and son team with a unique bond, and Team Able Abels - a father racing alongside his two young daughters. After navigating the open ocean to the island of Ovalau, teams embark on a 20km trek up and around an ancient volcanic crater as the treacherously hot conditions begin to claim their first racers. Team Bend Racing is forced to slow their pace to accommodate an overheating team member. and are passed by many teams including Team New Zealand who claim the lead for the first time. A team of American triathletes, Team Iron Cowboy explains their shared motivation for racing as they trek. As the sun sets on Race Day 1, the race leaders - Team New Zealand free dive to the ocean floor to retrieve a coveted race medallion. Meanwhile, slower teams on the island trek suffer through the conditions, as Team Unbroken makes a crucial navigational decision. Team Bend Racing struggles with fallen teammate preventing them from rejoining the race.
