In XXXHolic season 1 episode 3, titled "Angel," our protagonist Kimihiro Watanuki continues to navigate the world of spirits and demons with the help of his employer and mysterious shop owner, Yuko Ichihara.
The episode begins with Yuko and Watanuki attending a flower viewing party hosted by one of Yuko's acquaintances, where they encounter a young girl named Kohane Tsuyuri. Kohane is a shy and quiet girl who is said to possess the ability to communicate with spirits, which has resulted in her being ostracized by her peers and even her own mother. Yuko takes an interest in Kohane and invites her to visit her shop, where she can offer her help and guidance.
Upon meeting Kohane, Watanuki senses that something is not quite right with her, and this feeling is amplified when they witness a spirit attack her. They quickly realize that Kohane's ability to see and communicate with spirits has made her a target for malevolent entities, and they must work together to protect her.
As the episode progresses, we learn more about Kohane's troubled home life and her strained relationship with her mother, who is a famous spiritual medium. Kohane's mother, who is also present in the shop, initially dismisses the attacks on her daughter as a ploy for attention, but eventually comes around and begins to acknowledge the seriousness of the situation.
Throughout the episode, Watanuki grapples with his own feelings of inadequacy, as he struggles to come to terms with the fact that he cannot protect Kohane on his own. However, with Yuko's guidance and assistance, they are ultimately able to exorcise the malevolent entities that were plaguing Kohane and provide her with some sense of relief and comfort.
"Angel" is a poignant episode that delves into themes of isolation, vulnerability, and the need for human connection. It highlights the oftentimes painful consequences of possessing supernatural abilities, and the importance of having someone to turn to in times of despair. As always, the episode features stunning visuals, creative creature designs, and a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack that perfectly captures the melancholic mood.
