Zixx is a live-action, sci-fi/fantasy TV show which first aired on YTV in 2004. The show ran for three seasons and featured a youthful cast of actors. The main character, chosen to battle the forces of evil on this series is a spunky 12-year-old girl named Zixx. The show was developed by Savi Media and written by Seth Howard and Richard Elliott.

The series is set in the far-off future and mainly takes place on a planet known as Kits. The planet was once known for being peaceful and idyllic, but that changed when an evil shape-shifter named Onccalon took over. With his dark magic, Onccalon enslaved the two main races on Kits, the humanoid Ki and the robotic Corbots, turning them against each other. This led to a great civil war, but in the end, the forces of resistance banded together and defeated Onccalon.

The show starts with Zixx, who has come to planet Kits in search of a powerful energy called the Praxis. If harnessed, the Praxis could provide enough power to sustain life across the galaxy for generations. Zixx is a fiercely independent girl who is not afraid of taking risks or standing up to bullies. She has come to Kits to find the energy source to save her own planet and to rescue her scientist parents, who are being held captive by Onccalon.

Along the way, Zixx teams up with Flanngo, a Corbot who has been reprogrammed to be a good guy. Flanngo has a series of handy gadgets which help Zixx in her missions. These include a backpack which can turn into a jetpack, a wrist computer which can detect danger and a high-tech telescope which can see through walls.

In pursuit of finding the Praxis, Zixx and Flanngo join forces with the resistance fighters on the planet. Zixx is keen to help them in their mission to overthrow Onccalon’s rule and restore balance to the planet. The resistance is led by a mysterious second-generation Ki called Tabor. Tabor is the only one who knows the whereabouts of the Praxis, but his motives are uncertain. He is a mastermind tactician who often sends Zixx and Flanngo on perilous missions to gather intel or resources.

The show’s bad guy, Onccalon, is a shape-shifter who can transform into anything he wants, typically taking on the appearance of those he has defeated. He has a range of nasty minions, including the evil Hexxers who are magical beings who can turn anyone or anything into stone. His ultimate goal is to find the Praxis, so he can rule the galaxy and bend all beings to his will.

Overall, Zixx is a fun, fast-paced series with plenty of action, humor, and strong characters. The show successfully mixes elements of sci-fi and fantasy, which ensures that viewers are always kept guessing about what will happen next. The CGI effects used to create the robot characters and futuristic gadgets were impressive for the time, adding an extra dimension to the storytelling.

One unique aspect of the show is the way it addresses complex themes like governance, war, and oppression in a way that is appropriate for kids. The show's central messages about teamwork, resilience, and standing up for what’s right are meaningful for young viewers in the same way that Star Trek or Doctor Who have connected with fans of all ages.

Barbara Mamabolo, who played Zixx, was an essential part of the show’s success. Her portrayal of the character was perfectly nuanced, shifting from moments of vulnerability to strength, making Zixx feel like a fully realized character, rather than a stereotypical action hero.

While the show ended after three seasons, it remains a beloved cult classic among fans who fondly remember the adventures of Zixx and her loyal robot friend Flanngo. Its mix of action, humor, and strong storytelling ensured that it will be remembered as a classic YTV original series.
