In Phantom Menace, good rulers battle bad rulers, in the forms of Queen Amidala (played by Natalie Portman) and Senator Palpatine (played by Ian McDiarmid). Jedi knights, in the forms of Qui Gon Jinn (played by Liam Neeson) and Obie Wan Kenobi (played by Ewan MacGregor) battle the Federation, led by Nute Gunray. The Naboo, a peaceful people who inhabit a planet of the same name, are deadly enemies of the Gungans, who live 'neath the waves of the same planet.

The Jedi knights ask to have a word with the Federation leader. He tries to dispatch them, but they escape. In the escape they encounter a Gungan called Jar Jar Binks (played by Ahmed Best) who leads them through the intricacies of relations between Gungans and Naboo. The two Jedi plus Jar Jar Binks head for Naboo to rescue Queen Amidala from the clutches of the Federation droids.

The knights get the Queen clear of trouble, but their ship is damaged in the attempt and they land on Tatooine for repairs. While there, they meet a phantom they had only heard about, but knew existed. The Sith lord is instructed to wipe out the whole group. He fails. The knights and the Queen meet a young boy who grabs the imagination of Qui Gon Jinn, who takes the boy with them back to Naboo.

The Federation meets up with combined Naboo and Gungan troops, who have decided they can work together after all. Jar Jar is inept because he isn't a soldier, but he wins the day through his very ineptitude. The droid army gets its behind kicked and slinks back to its lair in defeat. The Sith lord kills Jinn. Obi Wan is promoted to full Jedi. Obi Wan believes in Jinn's vision for the boy found on Tatooine. He undertakes the boy's training, and Senator Palpatine promises to watch his career with great interest. Can he be the future of the Force?
