In Army Wives season 1 episode 2 titled "After Birth," the women of Fort Marshall rally around Denise Sherwood (Catherine Bell) as she navigates the aftermath of giving birth to her son Jeremy. Despite complications during the delivery, both Denise and the baby are healthy, and the episode opens with Denise beaming as she holds her newborn for the first time. Her husband Frank (Terry Serpico), however, is struggling with the reality of being a father again at his age. As Denise tries to come to terms with the changes in her life, she must also contend with the demands of being a soldier's wife and caring for her other children.

Meanwhile, Roxy (Sally Pressman) is dealing with her own set of challenges as she learns to adapt to life as an Army wife. She is overwhelmed by the strict social hierarchy that exists on base and finds it difficult to make friends. She also struggles to find her place in the world of her husband's comrades and feels like an outsider. Despite this, Roxy is determined to make the best of her situation and starts to take steps to build relationships with the other wives.

Roland Burton (Sterling K. Brown) and his wife Joan (Wendy Davis) are also facing challenges in their relationship. Roland is struggling to connect with his wife as she tries to balance her duties as an Army doctor with caring for their young daughter. Joan is haunted by the memory of a patient who died under her care, and she finds herself emotionally distant from her husband. As they try to navigate their way through these issues, Roland learns that his dream of becoming an Army psychiatrist may not be possible due to his age.

Finally, Pamela Moran (Brigid Brannagh) is on a mission to uncover the truth about her husband's deployment to Afghanistan. She launches an investigation to discover whether or not her husband is really on a covert mission, and she turns to Denise for help. As they work together, they begin to uncover secrets that make them question everything they thought they knew about the Army and their husbands' roles in it.

Throughout the episode, the women of Army Wives band together to support one another through the challenges of life in the military. They share their joys and their fears, and they offer each other the courage and strength to keep going in the face of adversity. As they navigate the complexities of their roles as wives, mothers, and soldiers, they are forced to confront their own vulnerabilities and learn to rely on one another more than ever before. "After Birth" is a heartwarming and emotional episode that showcases the bond that exists between these women and the resilience they possess in the face of hardship.
