Ep 5. Selfless

In Buffy The Vampire Slayer season 7 episode 5, titled "Selfless," the focus is on Anya, the former vengeance demon turned Scooby Gang member. The episode begins with a flashback to Anya's life as a demon, specifically to a time over 1,000 years ago when she granted a scorned woman's wish for vengeance against her cheating husband and his mistress. The wish went wrong, resulting in the deaths of dozens of innocent people, and the demon council decides to punish Anya by turning her human and forcing her to live as a mortal.

Back in the present day, Anya is struggling with her human emotions and guilt over her former life. Meanwhile, Buffy and the rest of the gang are dealing with a new threat: a demon named Olaf who has been summoned to Sunnydale by a group of teenage boys. Olaf is a troll who wields a powerful hammer and is wreaking havoc around town.

Despite their initial efforts to defeat Olaf, the gang is unsuccessful without Anya's help. When Anya learns of Olaf's presence, she recognizes him as the same demon who once granted her a wish for vengeance against a man who broke her heart. Anya had used the wish to turn her ex-boyfriend into a troll, but regretted it soon after and had spent centuries trying to atone for her mistake.

In order to stop Olaf, Anya must confront her past and the guilt she carries with her. Through a series of flashbacks, we see more of Anya's life as a demon and how she has struggled with her human emotions. We also see how her actions have affected the lives of those around her, including her ex-boyfriend and the woman whose wish went wrong.

In the end, Anya must make a difficult decision about how to defeat Olaf and whether or not to reveal her own past as a vengeance demon to the others. As always, the episode is filled with humor, action, and plenty of heart. It's a standout installment in the series and one that any Buffy fan should not miss.
