Entailing a total of 121 episodes over six seasons, the show's concept is the fictional brainchild of Cecily von Ziegesar. Developed for television and produced by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, it stars Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Chace Crawford, Taylor Momsen, Ed Westwick, Kelly Rutherford, Penn Badgely, and is narrated by Kristen Bell, the titular character. Shot primarily in Manhattan and Brooklyn, other locations have included the elite neighborhoods of Long Island's East End, Paris, and California.
Every episode begins at the Gossip Girl website homepage. A photo of the Upper East Side's it girl, Serena van der Woodsen, is shown, and a summary of past and future events is given.
Serena van der Woodsen (Lively) returns from a stint at a chichi New England boarding school, after having abruptly vanished some time in the past. Serena has skeletons aplenty in her closet, as does her entire circle of acquaintances and frenemies. For starters, Serena has slept with Nate Archibald (Crawford), boyfriend to her best friend Blair Waldorf (Meester). It is assumed this is why Serena bid NYC a prompt adieu months prior, but Serena's ex-friend, Gorgina (Michelle Trachtenberg), knows otherwise. She and Serena had rendezvoused at a hotel before Serena's departure, where they encountered a man who perished while high on drugs, and the whole fiasco unfolded on camera.
Meanwhile, the show's numerous romances are revealed via interactions between the lovers: Serena and Dan Humphrey (Badgley), a loner; Nick and Blair (who has bedded Nick's best friend Chuck); a brief dalliance shared by Dan's father and Serena's mother; Jenny Humphrey's (Momsen) and Blair's mentor-disciple relationship; and Vanessa Abrams (Jessica Szohr), Dan's former friend.
Seren'a secret is outed, and she and Dan break up. Blair and Chuck reunite after a summer apart, though at first deny their feelings for one another. The senior year of high school is chronicled, displaying each character at various stages in their arc. Upon the encouragement of Poppy Lifton (Tamara Feldman), another Upper East Side teen socialite, Serena gains in popularity as a socialite. Blair is intimidated by this development and some distance arises between them.
Elsewhere, Nate tries coming to terms with his father's unlawful history, busying himself by wooing Vanessa, who finds herself becoming steadily more entrenched in Upper East Side intrigues. On a lark, Jenny decides to become a fashion designer, and she bunts heads with her father, Rufus Humphrey (Matthew Settle). Dan, formerly the odd man odd, is suddenly front and center via his relationships, romantic and platonic, with Serena and Nate.
Rufus and Lily grow closer, while Blair determines to get into Yale. Chuck's meddlesome uncle, Jack Bass (Desmond Harrington), enters the story and begins making trouble following the death of his brother, Bart Bass (Robert John Burke), Lily's late husband. Blair, Dan, and Vanessa get accepted to New York University. A movie star, Olivia Burke (Hilary Duff) is one of their classmates, and she and Dan begin courting. Nate tries his luck at Columbia University while Serena sits out one year of school. Chuck takes over Bass industries, and Jenny rises to the top of the social heap at the Constance Billard School.
Serena serves as publicist to Ursula Nyquist (Tyra Banks), a famous and contrary actress who never suffers fools. Other Season 3 celeb cameos include Jimmy Fallon, Lady Gaga, and William Baldwin. Jenny pursues Nate, though he only has eyes for Serena. At the same time, Jenny's relationship with Eric (Connor Paolo) is strained as she has begun dealing drugs. Rufus sends her to spend a season with her mother in Hudson. Blair and Chuck take a stab at love, but fail miserably. Dan and Vanessa discover more-than-friendly feelings for each other. Serena's career and soul searching continues, and she beds Carter Baizen (Sebastian Stan), Nate's married cousin Tripp, and lastly Nate.
Serena eventually becomes romantically entangled with a former teacher, while a girl named Juliet Sharp (Katie Cassidy) secretly plots Serena's downfall. The Gossip Girl character continues to narrate, and Serena continues to try and discover her identity, several times coming very close, but never quite succeeding in solving the mystery.

What went down on the series finale of "Gossip Girl?"
The two-part series finale of "Gossip Girl" is promising to kill off a character who has been there since season one... OoOoh! Who's gonna kick the bucket??
Kristen Bell will be making a cameo on the series finale of "Gossip Girl." Will she be playing the infamous blogger?
Lively shows off one heck of a sparkler on that finger!
After about a year seeing one another, Ryan Reynolds has made an hones woman of "Gossip Girl" star Blake Lively. The prior "Green Lantern" co-stars were wed Sunday night in a private ceremony in South Carolina, according to People. For Reynolds, it's his first try at marriage since his 2010 divorce from Scarlett Johansson.
Sure, it could all be one big, wacky misunderstanding. Or it could be that Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively didn't want to deal with a photographer-hounded wedding. Either way, a New York police report may have outed that the "Green Lantern" co-stars are now Man and Wife.
It's lived about as long as any show could expect - and on the lowest rung of the network totem pole, no less. But alas, next season will be the last for "Gossip Girl". It's sixth and final outing will be a mere 11 episodes. Returning alongside it? "The Vampire Diaries", "Supernatural", "90201" and a few others.
