Pan Am is television series that follows the adventures of a team of flight attendants and pilots as they work for Pan American Airlines in the 1960s. Because the series was based upon the stories from an actual flight attendant at the airline during the time period being featured, the show has a certain amount of credibility. The show also had a certain amount of international appeal thanks to the several exotic locations where the stories took place and the colorful characters that made appearances.
Although the show lasted only one season, it managed to win several awards, including one of Unsung Show of the Year. The series had a historical feel due to the old time feel of the airliners and the wardrobe used by the cast. The show used a soap opera like storyline of romances, betrayal, and drama to put the adventures of the characters into the spotlight. Thanks to some colorful embellishments, the series manages to stay interesting and riveting while still staying true to the historical roots of aviation.
Pan Am used the careers of the various characters to advance all sorts of storylines. Everything from espionage to evacuation missions was undertaken by the commercial airline, and the members of the aircraft team play prominent roles in all sorts of missions. Viewers are also treated to a glimpse of air travel in its heyday, before cramped cabins and crowded planes transformed the industry. The series is as much a historical biography as it is a drama following characters through unimaginable circumstances.
As a television show, the serial drama might have had a short shelf life, but it manages to entertain viewers on a number of different levels. While some plot points are a little too mature for younger viewers, this show is geared to deliver enjoyment to a wide audience. Everything from the uniforms of the flight attendants to the inside of the airlines pays tribute to a bygone era and the show aims to tell the story from their point of view.
