Amnesiac centers on the story of a man who sustains a brain injury and resulting memory loss due to a car accident. When he wakes up the next day, he starts to suspect that his wife may not really be his wife and that a serious wool may have been pulled over his eyes in the house at which he increasingly becomes a prisoner. It is considered to be both a mystery and a psychological thriller. One thing that is unusual about Amnesiac is that the characters are never named. This creates the effect of what life can truly be like for someone who has complete memory loss and has to learn everything all over again. If there is one thing that creates the effect of disconnection for any human being, it's forgetting the names of those closest to us, or worse, forgetting our own name. The film also seems to take place in the 1960's, which is interesting because, in reality, there was little to no awareness of memory loss. At least, not the way that there is today. However, the 1960's was considered to be a decade of great change, which the film shows but from a more introspective point of view. The sense of a web of secretive crime is also very representative of the 1960's as that was the decade that President Kennedy was assassinated and arguably, when the Cold War was present and there was an enormous collective fear about the Russian Communists' supposed plans to attack on U.S. soil.
