The French town of Lourdes at the end of the 19th century is the setting for this drama that sees Judge Rousseau asked to determine whether admitted killer Bouvier is mentally unstable. Bouvier is shown throughout on a murderous rampage across the rural parts of France after being released from an asylum he feels he is not ready to be freed from. The Judge finds it more and more difficult to understand the mind of the killer and begins to spend more time with Bouvier in a bid to understand why he would commit his crimes.
