American Greed: Scams, Scoundrels and Scandals Season 11 Episode 17 Neighborhood Inferno

  • August 14, 2017

Neighborhood Inferno is the seventeenth episode of the eleventh season of the show American Greed: Scams, Scoundrels and Scandals. In this episode, viewers are taken on a journey of greed, deception and arson that rocked a small neighborhood in New Jersey.

The episode begins with a heart-stopping footage of a raging fire that engulfed a quiet suburban block one fateful night. As the flames raged, the screams of innocent victims muted by the crackling of the inferno, a community was left in ruins. The fire was quickly dubbed the worst suburban arson case in state history, and the subsequent investigation would uncover a web of deceit, manipulation and unchecked ambition.

As the investigation progressed, detectives turned their focus on a local businessman, Freddy Augello, who had an array of shady connections and a reputation for being a ruthless opportunist. Augello had recently come into a sizeable sum of money after selling a thriving motorcycle gang he had previously run.

With money burning a hole in his pocket, Freddy set his sights on a new venture. He convinced several business partners, including a respected community leader and a former police officer, to invest in a $400,000 motorcycle club he was planning to open. As it turned out, the motorcycle club was nothing but a front for illegal activity, including drug trafficking, gambling and prostitution.

But fast riches and illicit activities weren't enough for Freddy. In a bid to increase his profits, Augello hatched a plan to burn down a popular local restaurant, hoping to eliminate the competition and force their customers to migrate to his club. He enlisted the help of a small-time criminal named Joseph Russo, who had a string of offenses for robbery and arson.

On the night of the fire, Russo broke into the restaurant but quickly realized that he was not alone. The owner, Lloyd Middaugh, was in the building, sleeping in the kitchen. With no regard for human life, Russo poured gasoline on the kitchen floor and set it alight, leaving Middaugh to burn alive.

The fire quickly spread to nearby houses, rapidly turning into an inferno that would claim the lives of three people and cause $3.5 million in damages. As the community reeled from the tragedy, detectives feverishly began piecing together the clues that would lead them to the culprits.

Neighborhood Inferno is a gripping tale of greed, betrayal and arson that sheds light on the depravity of individuals willing to do anything for wealth and success. It is a cautionary tale about the devastating consequences of unchecked ambition and puts a spotlight on the importance of ethical business practices, no matter how alluring the prospect of riches may be. The episode skillfully interweaves interviews with law enforcement officials, community members and key witnesses with dramatic reconstruction footage to bring the story to life.
