American Greed: Scams, Scoundrels and Scandals Season 11 Episode 8 Fouled Out / Rumeal Robinson
- March 20, 2017
In this episode of American Greed: Scams, Scoundrels and Scandals season 11, titled "Fouled Out / Rumeal Robinson," viewers are taken on a journey into the world of college basketball where a once-promising athlete turns to deceit and fraud in an attempt to maintain a lavish lifestyle.
Rumeal Robinson was a basketball star at the University of Michigan, helping to lead the team to victory in the 1989 NCAA championship. However, after his college career ended, Robinson found himself struggling to make a living as a professional player and turned to other ways to earn money.
Robinson began by investing in a fast-food restaurant chain, but when that business failed to bring in the profits he desired, he turned his focus to real estate. Using his celebrity status, Robinson convinced investors to give him money to purchase properties, promising them hefty returns on their investment.
At first, Robinson appeared to be successful in his real estate ventures. He purchased numerous properties in Michigan and Florida, including a high-end condominium in Miami Beach. However, despite his promises to investors, Robinson was not generating the returns he had promised. In fact, he was hemorrhaging money, and his debts began to spiral out of control.
Rather than come clean to his investors, Robinson chose to engage in a series of fraudulent schemes to maintain his lifestyle. He used forged documents and falsified financial statements to secure additional loans, and even played the sympathy card, claiming to be a victim of Hurricane Andrew in an attempt to win over the hearts of those who might be able to help him out of his financial trouble.
As Robinson's debts continued to mount, so did the severity of his schemes. He began using cash advances from credit cards to finance his lifestyle, and when those ran out, he went even further, forging checks and stealing money from his own mother.
Eventually, Robinson's web of lies came crashing down around him. He was arrested and charged with bank fraud, mail fraud, and wire fraud, and was eventually sentenced to 6.5 years in prison. His investors lost millions of dollars, and many were left destitute as a result of Robinson's deception.
Through interviews with Robinson's victims, law enforcement officials, and legal experts, "Fouled Out / Rumeal Robinson" takes a deep dive into the mind of a scam artist and the devastating impact his actions had on the lives of those around him. It also serves as a cautionary tale of the dangers of greed and the importance of due diligence when investing in any venture.
