American Greed: Scams, Scoundrels and Scandals Season 7 Episode 5 Wild West Rip-Off

  • April 4, 2013

Wild West Rip-Off is the fifth episode of the seventh season of American Greed: Scams, Scoundrels and Scandals. This episode focuses on a group of Texas oilmen who swindled billions of dollars from investors in a classic Ponzi scheme.

The episode opens with a montage of cowboys, horses, and oil rigs, setting the scene for the oil-rich Texan landscape where this scam takes place. We’re introduced to Jack Redmond, the charismatic leader of a group of oilmen who convinced investors that they had discovered a new oil field in West Texas that would make them all rich beyond their wildest dreams.

Through interviews with FBI agents, investors, and lawyers involved in the case, we learn that Redmond and his co-conspirators used the age-old tactic of promising high returns to attract investors, while keeping the details of their supposed oil field secret. They claimed that the field was so valuable that it had attracted interest from major oil companies like Exxon and Chevron, but that they were holding out for a higher price for their land.

In reality, the oilmen had no oil field and no interest from major companies. Instead, they used investors’ money to pay off earlier investors and to fund their lavish lifestyles, including private jets, expensive cars, and luxury homes. They also funneled money into other shady business ventures, further padding their pockets while leaving investors with nothing.

As the scheme grew larger and more investors poured their money in, Redmond and his cohorts became increasingly emboldened and brazen in their tactics. They hosted extravagant parties, gave away expensive gifts, and even paid for an all-expenses-paid trip to London for a group of investors.

But it all came crashing down when one investor started to ask too many questions and realized that something was amiss. He alerted the authorities, and the FBI launched an investigation that eventually uncovered the Ponzi scheme.

Through interviews and archival footage, we see the fallout of the scam as investors who have lost everything confront Redmond and his co-conspirators. We also hear from lawyers involved in the case who detail the legal maneuvers used to claw back some of the stolen funds and prosecute the perpetrators.

Overall, Wild West Rip-Off is a fascinating glimpse into the world of Ponzi schemes and the unscrupulous individuals who perpetrate them. It’s a cautionary tale for anyone considering investing their money in a get-rich-quick scheme, and a tribute to the diligence of law enforcement officials who work to bring these scams to justice.
