- February 5, 2015
In season 9 episode 4 of American Greed: Scams, Scoundrels and Scandals, titled "A Widow's Web," viewers are presented with the heartbreaking story of Gary and Jan Tyrone. In 2006, the couple had just finished building their dream home in Aransas Pass, Texas when Gary suddenly passed away in his sleep. Devastated, Jan was left to deal with not only her grief but also the financial burden that came with her husband's death.
Jan turned to her brother-in-law, Joe Denton, for help in managing her husband's estate and assets. However, it soon became apparent that Denton wasn't actually interested in helping Jan. Instead, he began using her vulnerable state to manipulate her into giving him control of her husband's assets.
Denton convinced Jan to sign documents transferring the ownership of Gary's properties and bank accounts to him, with the promise that he would take care of everything and make sure she was financially stable. Jan trusted Denton and believed he had her best interests at heart - little did she know that he was actually siphoning off her husband's assets and using them for his personal gain.
Over the next few years, Denton used Gary's assets to make risky investments and live a lavish lifestyle. As Jan struggled financially, Denton would offer her small loans that she was expected to pay back with high interest rates. He even convinced her to take out a reverse mortgage on her home, which he then used to pay off his own debts.
Jan's suspicions were finally raised when she received a foreclosure notice on her home. She immediately sought legal help and was shocked to learn that she had been swindled out of nearly all of her husband's assets. In total, Denton had stolen over $2 million from her.
As Jan fought to reclaim her assets and bring Denton to justice, she faced setback after setback. Denton used his connections and influence in the community to try and silence Jan, and even resorted to threatening her with physical harm. But Jan refused to back down, and with the help of a dedicated attorney, she was finally able to win her case against Denton in court.
"A Widow's Web" is a cautionary tale about the danger of trusting the wrong people in times of need. Jan's story highlights the devastating impact that financial fraud can have, particularly on those who are already vulnerable. Through her determination and resilience, Jan shows us that it is possible to overcome even the most devastating financial losses and rebuild our lives.
