After failing to save a building during a fire, Oliver suffers from severe injuries and PTSD. As a result, he decides to temporarily retire his vigilante persona, leaving his team to fend for themselves. Meanwhile, Laurel takes on a case defending a man who claims he was wrongly accused of arson, but begins to question his story when the prosecuting attorney presents strong evidence against him.
As Oliver struggles with his physical and emotional scars, he is forced to confront his past mistakes and the impact they have had on his loved ones. His sister Thea tries to reach out to him but is met with resistance, while his ex-girlfriend and current IT specialist Felicity tries to support him in her own way.
Meanwhile, the villainous Firefly, a former firefighter turned psychotic arsonist, emerges in Starling City and begins wreaking havoc. With Oliver out of commission, it's up to his team, including his former bodyguard turned ally Diggle and reformed criminal Roy, to stop Firefly before he causes too much destruction.
As the episode progresses, Oliver begins to doubt his decision to retire as he sees the chaos unfolding in the city. He starts training again, but struggles to get back into his old form. In the end, it is a combination of his physical prowess and his mental fortitude that allows him to face Firefly and save the day.
Overall, the episode Burned is a dramatic and emotional exploration of Oliver's character and the impact his actions have on those around him. It also introduces a new and compelling villain in Firefly, who serves as a powerful foil to Oliver's heroism. With excellent performances from the cast and strong writing, this episode is a standout in the first season of Arrow.
