Stephen's injuries heal however he is still troubled by memories of his affair with Isabelle. As he and his men make plans of war, Stephen unexpectedly meets Isabelle. The battle is horrible and Stephen's friendship with Jack Firebrace comforts him. After Isabelle's sister, Jeanne, tells Stephen Isabelle's secret she has kept from him, Stephen finds hope in the future.

Stephen and Isabelle began an affair which results in them facing consequences. Years pass and Stephen is placed on the Western Front at the exact place where he experienced his great love. He meets Jack Firebrace, a tunneller who helps him make it through the war and find peace with his feelings for Isabelle.
