Frank Reagan is a distinguished and decorated police commissioner running the NYPD, following in the footsteps of his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family is deeply involved in the law enforcement of New York City, and as the clan leader, he is expected to keep everything in line. Erin is his daughter, a bright young Assistant District Attorney, while his two sons, Danny and Jamie, work as a detective and police officer, respectively.

In Smack Attack, the sixth episode of the show's first season, the Reagan family is confronted with the harsh realities of life in New York City's drug underworld. Danny is working on a case involving heroin seizures. He and his partner get a tip-off that a large-scale drug deal is about to take place on a street corner. They lay in wait and observe as the deal goes down. But things quickly escalate when a couple of drug addicts steal the heroin from the dealer at gunpoint. In the ensuing chaos, a young woman is killed, and the addicts flee the scene. It is Danny's job to track them down and bring them to justice.

Meanwhile, Jamie gets pulled into a case involving a young boy who goes missing after he goes to his school's bake sale alone. Jamie, a rookie cop, is tasked with the daunting task of interviewing potential witnesses. He is frustrated because many people are reluctant to provide useful information, making his job harder. Eventually, he finds a witness who saw a man leading the boy away by the hand and takes the information to the detectives working the case.

On the other side of the law, the most intriguing part of the episode involves Frank's Reagan's son, Joe, who was killed years before but still haunts the family's existences. A case of police brutality has resurfaced in which Joe was involved, leading Frank to reckon with the righteousness of his late son's actions. An internal investigation is launched to reassess the events and shed light on the truth of that fateful evening. This creates tension within the family, as their carefully constructed picture of Joe comes into question.

The episode also explores the relationships within the Reagan family. There is a heartwarming scene between Jamie and Danny, who bond over Jamie's frustration with investigating a child's abduction. The family comes together to discuss the case, providing insights from their various perspectives. Even Mayor Poole, a close friend of Frank and an integral part of the family, joins the conversation, providing some non-law enforcement insights into the case which they cannot afford to ignore.

The episode's standout moments come from the characters' interactions with each other, showing how they rely on one another to cope with this sometimes brutal profession. Their relationships are genuine, heartwarming at times and provide some character development that, while not strictly needed for the episode, is one of the strong points of the series.

As the story progresses, it touches on themes of drug abuse, street violence, and the toll it takes on the victims, their families, and the police working these cases. However, Smack Attack doesn't wallow in things like self-pity and nihilism, instead aiming to find justice and, to some extent, redemption for those involved in the case.

Overall, Blue Bloods season 1 episode 6, Smack Attack, delivers the requisite police procedural drama viewers have come to expect from the show, with some character moments that enhance the narrative to make the episode more enjoyable. It tackles themes that should resonate with anyone interested in justice, crime, and coping with personal demons, delivered with an eye towards giving voice to the victims involved.
