Call the Midwife Season 1 Episode 4 Episode 4

In Call the Midwife season 1 episode 4, the storyline focuses on the increasing problem of overcrowding in the East End of London. The episode begins with the midwives getting a phone call from a woman who's heavily pregnant and in desperate need of help. When they arrive at her cramped and dreary apartment, they realize that she's living with her abusive husband and their four other children.

The midwives manage to help the woman give birth, but they quickly discover that her husband is unwilling to let her leave the house to get to the clinic for a check-up. Determined not to let her suffer any longer, the pregnant woman devises a plan to leave her husband with her children and starts a new life without him.

Meanwhile, Sister Evangelina is back to her old self after an infection almost took her life. She and Sister Julienne are called to the home of an unwed mother who's been feeling unwell and needs medical attention. When they arrive, they find out that the young woman's parents never approved of her having a child out of wedlock and have been emotionally manipulating her into giving up her child for adoption.

The midwives do their best to counsel the expectant mother into keeping her child and standing up for her rights. After a lot of heartache and tears, the young woman's parents come to understand the unconditional love and bond between a mother and her child.

Back at Nonnatus House, Cynthia is overcome with emotion after a visit from her sister, Alice. Alice has Down Syndrome and has always been an inseparable part of Cynthia's life. However, she's troubled to find out that her sister's care home is overcrowded, understaffed and woefully underfunded.

Moved by her sister's plight, Cynthia and Sister Mary Cynthia organize a group of people to fundraise for the care home and spread awareness about the need for better treatment of people with disabilities.

The episode ends with the midwives coming together to celebrate the birth of a healthy baby boy, born to a young couple who they've helped throughout their pregnancy. The new parents are overjoyed to have welcomed a child into their family, and the midwives are once again reminded of the beauty and wonder of new life.
