After the shocking revelation of Yuu's ability in the first episode, we see him and Nao attending an audition to enroll in a music school. The school specializes in nurturing the abilities of talented teenagers who can use supernatural powers. Yuu, who can possess anyone for five seconds, wants to learn how to play the guitar and sing in order to aid his mission and keep his new identity as a model student.
Amid the audition, they are introduced to a group of gifted teenagers who gather in a small music club known as the "Hoshi no Umi Band." They all have unique abilities, and music is the way they express themselves and connect with each other.
One of the members of the band is a girl named Yusa, who has the ability to channel a spirit named Misa into her body. Misa was a pop star who tragically died in an accident, and Yusa's spirit channeling allows her to perform as Misa once again. Despite being shy and reserved as Yusa, she transforms into a confident and energetic performer with Misa's spirit.
Yuu is immediately drawn to her, but he can't help but feel uneasy about Yusa's ability. He senses Misa's anguish and desperation through her music and the performance brings back painful memories that he's trying to forget.
The audition ends, and Yuu and Nao are accepted into the school. They begin their first music class, led by the laid-back and quirky instructor, Sekiya. Yuu struggles to play the guitar and sing. Still, he pushes himself to get it right, as it is the only way he can protect himself and his friends from the organization that's after them.
During their class, Sekiya receives a call from someone looking for him. He steps out of the classroom while the students practice. Yuu wanders the hallway, and his attention is drawn to music coming from the music room next door. He enters the room and finds Yusa practicing her guitar.
While they're talking, Yusa's spirit, Misa, takes over and starts to sing a melancholic song. Her performance is so intense it sends Yuu into a panic attack, and he accidentally uses his power to possess Yusa for more than five seconds, revealing his secret to her.
Yusa takes the news surprisingly well. In fact, she introduces Yuu and Nao to the rest of the Hoshi no Umi Band, where they bond over their shared abilities and passion for music.
Meanwhile, the organization that's after Yuu and Nao is getting closer to discovering their whereabouts. They've begun to target individuals who have recently interacted with Yuu, including the Hoshi no Umi Band members. As a result, the band's performance later that evening is disrupted by an attack from the organization.
Yuu and Nao jump into action, using their powers and their newfound friendship with the band members to protect them and defend themselves from the attack. Amid the chaos, Yusa's spirit Misa takes over again and sings a song that soothes everyone's hearts, bringing them together and calming them down.
The episode ends with the band members performing a song together, united not just by their passion for music but also by their abilities and their shared danger from the organization that's after them.
Overall, episode two of Charlotte continues to develop the fascinating supernatural world of the series and introduces some new characters, including the Hoshi no Umi Band members. The episode also explores Yuu's struggles to control his power while trying to blend in as a normal student. With high emotional stakes and tense action scenes, "Melody of Despair" delivers an engaging and satisfying episode.
