Angel is a supernatural drama television series that premiered on the WB network in 1999. The show is a spin-off of the popular series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and follows the character Angel, a vampire with a soul who is attempting to redeem himself for his past crimes by fighting evil in Los Angeles. Season 1 Episode 2, titled "Lonely Hearts," begins with Angel investigating a series of murders that have occurred in a local dating service.

The episode opens with a woman named Denise walking into a bar, where she meets a man named Glenn. They hit it off and decide to go back to Glenn's place, where Denise is attacked and killed by a demon. The next day, Angel receives a call from Kate Lockley, a detective who he met in the previous episode. Kate is investigating the murder of another woman who was also a client of the dating service. Angel agrees to help her with the investigation.

Meanwhile, Cordelia, who has followed Angel to Los Angeles to become an actress, has gotten a job at the same dating service where the murder victims were clients. Cordelia befriends a co-worker named Aura and starts to get too involved in her job, hoping that it will lead her to stardom.

Angel and Kate visit the dating service and question the employees, but they don't get any helpful information. However, Angel realizes that the murder victims have one thing in common: they were all looking for love. This leads him to believe that the killer is a demon who preys on lonely hearts.

That night, Cordelia goes on a date with a man she met through the dating service. The date seems to be going well, but when they return to the man's apartment, Cordelia realizes that he is the killer. The man reveals himself as a demon and attacks Cordelia, but she is saved by Angel.

Angel and Kate confront the demon, who reveals that he has been killing his victims because he is trying to find a mate before an upcoming demonic mating ritual. Angel and Kate are able to subdue the demon and prevent the ritual from taking place.

The episode ends with Cordelia quitting her job at the dating service and Angel continuing his search for redemption by helping the people of Los Angeles.

In "Lonely Hearts," the show continues to explore Angel's complex character and his attempts to atone for his past. The episode also introduces a new character, Kate Lockley, who will become a recurring character on the show. The episode contains the signature mix of humor, horror, and heart that made Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off so beloved by fans.
