Ep 1. Pilot

In the pilot episode of Colony, we are introduced to a world that has recently been taken over by alien invaders. The story follows a family, the Bowmans, as they struggle to survive in the new systems put in place by the aliens, referred to as the Hosts. The episode begins with the family living their everyday lives in their Los Angeles home, but soon we see the city under curfew, and the family separated as the Hosts conduct a search for an unknown person. This serves as an introduction to the new way of life where the Hosts have a strict control over the city's population.

We are introduced to Will Bowman (Josh Holloway), a former FBI agent, who is earlier shown, looking for his missing son, Charlie. Later, he is portrayed as reluctantly collaborating with the Homeland Security team headed by Phyllis. Snyder, Dallas (actor Peter Jacobson), during their daily routine of tracking the whereabouts of the wanted person, taken as a rebel in the Host's eyes.

We see the stress and fear among the people of the city as they move about their daily lives within the host's rules. The Host's occupation force has turned the Los Angeles into walled blocks patrolled by armed red-helmeted Host military police. The people are forced to not act out of line, or face the consequences. These soldiers are seen behaving brutally with citizens, using weapons and searching for people of interest, which indicates their aggressive and unforgiving nature.

Katie Bowman (Sarah Wayne Callies), wife of Will, has a secret life where she is hiding information from her family. She has implemented an arrangement with the Resistance Group's leader, Broker working towards the liberation of the entire city from the Host's clutches.

The episode leaves us with cliffhangers and questions in the audience's mind, and a sense of living the lives of people who have to buckle under their host's yoke. We are left wondering what is about to happen to the Bowmans and why Charlie was taken away. There's a lot of uncertainty about the future, and it's a grim reminder that they now live in a place where the Hosts have the upper-hand in every area of life. The pilot is an excellent start to the series as it creates a relatable narrative for the audience to rely on throughout the journey.
