In the show Corpse Princess, season 1 episode 1 called "The Dead Dance," we are introduced to Makina Hoshimura, a girl who appears to be an ordinary high school student. However, Makina is actually a "Shikabane Hime," a living corpse with the sole purpose of hunting down and destroying other undead creatures known as "Shikabane."
The episode begins with a group of young men who are trying to summon a "Shikabane." They insist that they are just looking for a thrill, but it soon becomes clear that they have darker intentions. As they begin their ritual, they are interrupted by Makina, who swiftly dispatches the creature they have summoned.
Makina's mentor, Keisei Tagami, arrives to collect her, and they set off to complete their next mission. Along the way, Keisei explains to Makina that her true purpose is to defeat the 108 Shikabane that were created when a powerful priest named Ouri Kagami tried to cheat death and failed. In order to do this, Makina must find and destroy each of the Shikabane while also coming to terms with her own existence as a Shikabane Hime.
Makina and Keisei are sent to a local club where they suspect a group of Shikabane are hiding out. As they investigate, they discover that the club is hosting an illegal dance competition, and several of the contestants have been transformed into Shikabane. Makina realizes that the only way to defeat them is to destroy their hidden "Contractor," a living human who has made a deal with the Shikabane for power and immortality.
As Makina battles the Shikabane in the midst of the dance competition, Keisei searches for the Contractor. He eventually finds him, but is forced to make a difficult decision when he realizes that the Contractor is actually a young boy who has been forced into this position against his will.
Ultimately, Makina manages to defeat the Shikabane and the Contractor is released from his curse. However, the episode ends on a somber note as Makina reflects on the harsh reality of her existence and the sacrifices that she must make in order to fulfill her duty as a Shikabane Hime.
