In the season 3 finale of Crikey! It's the Irwins, the family faces their most challenging rescue yet as they work to relocate a massive crocodile from their own backyard.
It all begins when Terri spots the croc in one of the family's ponds. She quickly realizes it's the same croc that her late husband Steve had caught and relocated over 15 years ago. Back then, the croc was a manageable size, but now it's estimated to be over 14 feet long and weighs over a ton.
The family knows that this croc is both dangerous and protected, so they call in the local wildlife officials for assistance. However, they soon learn that the officials are understaffed and overworked, and may not be able to help them as quickly as they need.
Determined to keep their family, staff, and guests safe, the Irwins take matters into their own hands. They start by building a temporary holding pen to keep the croc confined while they work on a more permanent solution. But even this is not an easy task, as the croc proves to be incredibly strong and resistant to being caught.
The family then decides to call in the help of their neighbor, and renowned crocodile expert, Rick Shine. With his extensive knowledge and experience in handling crocs, he's able to help them come up with a plan to safely move the animal.
The process is multi-faceted and dangerous. In addition to setting up traps, the team must clear thick vegetation around the ponds where the croc resides, and mark off potential escape routes, which include fences, gullies, and waterways. Then, they use a number of techniques to try and lure the croc into the trap, including using his favorite food, pigs.
It's a grueling process that spans days, and requires the entire family's effort, including Robert, who rushes home from school to help. At one point, things get intense as the croc slips through the trap, but the Irwins refuse to give up. In the end, they're able to successfully relocate the crocodile to a safer, more remote area, where it can live out its days in peace.
Throughout the episode, the Irwins display unwavering dedication to their mission, as well as supreme teamwork and trust in each other's abilities. They're also able to showcase the importance of respecting and preserving wildlife, even the most dangerous kind.
As the show concludes, the family reflects on the experience and expresses gratitude for the lessons it has taught them. They acknowledge that the work they do is not easy, but it's necessary, and they're proud to be continuing Steve's legacy of conservation and education.
