Johnny Smith is a man still trying to regain the life he once had. A teacher at a local high school, Johnny is spirited and intelligent, with a heart of gold and a giving spirit that often puts him at odds with his own good. One fateful night, Johnny is involved in a terrible car accident, one that leaves him in a coma for six years.

When Johnny wakes up, he finds that the world he knew is long gone. His girlfriend has moved on, his school is closed, and the world he once knew has moved on without him. But he also finds that he has a strange new gift: the ability to see the future, or what he calls the "dead zone."
