The Federal Witness Protection Program is designed to give new lives to people who may have become endangered by helping law enforcement solve crimes. Many movies and television programs have used the program for dramatic effect, but the most recent TV show to involve the Witness Protection Program is USA's In Plain Sight. The show is set in the beautiful city of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and it is also filmed there. The setting gives the show much of its unique look, and many viewers love to tune in to the program just to get a glimpse of the interesting desert locale. Mostly, though, viewers enjoy the show for its portrayal of the federal agents who must manage the people involved in the Witness Protection Program.

In Plain Sight stars actress Mary McCormack as a Deputy United States Marshal named Mary Shannon. The character works as a member of the Albuquerque office of the Witness Protection Program, and she must work hard to handle the many cases that come through her office. In addition to highlighting her life as a deputy in the program, the show also depicts Shannon's troubles with her personal life and her partnership with fellow Deputy Marshall Mann, played by Fred Weller. Though the program has serious moments, much of the action and drama on the show are portrayed in a light-hearted manner. Though each episode involves the life of someone who has been placed in the Witness Protection Program, the drama of these situations is tempered by the good-natured relationships between the characters who appear week after week.

One of the major reasons for In Plain Sight's success is the interplay between the two main characters. Throughout the show's run, there is a palpable romantic tension between the two characters, and the on-screen chemistry between the two actors is something that has captivated fans since the first season. For the most part, the two lead characters do not act on any romantic feelings they may have for one another, but it is made clear that they care about each other very deeply. Because the characters are so well-drawn and the actors are so gifted, it is a treat to watch the relationships develop week after week.

There are many shows that attempt to strike the perfect balance between serious drama and an easy-going vibe, but few of them pull off the feat as successfully as In Plain Sight. The show's ingenious use of the Witness Protection Programs and its gorgeous Albuquerque setting set the perfect backdrop for the drama and fun that come with each episode. In Plain Sight may have been taken off the air, but fans can still enjoy the program through repeat showings and DVDs.
