The episode "Saved" in season 4 of Dead Zone opens with Johnny Smith (Anthony Michael Hall) waking up in his bedroom, feeling refreshed and in much better spirits than he has been lately. He spends some time playing with his son JJ (Connor Price) and chatting with his ex-girlfriend Sara (Nicole de Boer), feeling grateful for the good things in his life.
However, Johnny's peaceful morning is soon interrupted by a message from Sheriff Turner (Chris Bruno), calling him to the courthouse. When Johnny arrives, he learns that his old friend and fellow psychic Alex Sinclair (Tom Wopat) has been arrested for the murder of a young woman. Alex swears that he is innocent, but the evidence seems stacked against him--he was found at the scene of the crime with the murder weapon in his hand, and he has no memory of what happened.
Johnny feels compelled to help his friend, even though he is still recovering from his own recent trauma. He starts having visions of the night of the murder, but they are confused and jumbled--he can't get a clear picture of what really happened. Meanwhile, Sarah tries to convince him to take some time off and focus on his own healing, but Johnny is too dedicated to helping his friend to back down now.
As the investigation continues, Johnny uncovers some troubling information about the victim's past and the people in her life. He starts to suspect that the murder was not a random crime of passion, but rather a carefully planned attack. However, as he gets closer to the truth, he finds himself in danger as well--someone seems to be following him and trying to silence him before he can reveal what he has learned.
Despite the risks, Johnny is determined to see justice served for his friend Alex. He teams up with Sheriff Turner to gather evidence and piece together the timeline of events from the night of the murder. As they get closer to the truth, they realize that there is a lot more to this case than they initially thought, and that the murderer may still be on the loose.
In the end, Johnny's persistence and intuition pay off--he is able to identify the killer and bring them to justice. However, in the process, he also learns some hard truths about the people he thought he could trust, and the limits of his own abilities. As the episode draws to a close, Johnny is left wondering whether he has truly saved his friend, or whether justice has come at too high a cost.
