The Doctor takes the TARDIS to the luxurious passenger ship Empress, which is cruising through deep space. The ship is being used to transport animal specimens collected from various planets for zoos and displays. The Doctor and Romana quickly realize that there is something wrong with the ship, and this soon becomes apparent to the other passengers and crew as well.

The ship's captain, Rigg, is initially dismissive of the Doctor's concerns, but soon realizes that something serious is going on when one of the creatures in the hold is found dead, and the other animals begin to act strangely. The Doctor and Romana investigate the ship, which involves getting into the hold where the exotic creatures have been contained. There they meet Tryst and Dymond, who are the scientists responsible for collecting the specimens.

As they continue their investigations, the Doctor and Romana discover that the ship has collided with another vessel while in hyperspace, and the resulting explosion has caused two parallel universes to merge, creating dangerous "interdimensional creatures" that are spreading through the ship. Tryst and Dymond are horrified to realize that one of their own specimens, a creature known as a Mandrel, has been infected by the interdimensional virus. They must find a way to contain the virus before it spreads and destroys the entire ship.

Meanwhile, Rigg and his first officer, Fisk, are trying to cover up the fact that the ship has collided with another vessel, as they are transporting a valuable cargo of drugs. This subplot leads to tension on board the ship, as Rigg and Fisk attempt to keep their illegal activities under wraps while the situation on board deteriorates.

As the situation on board worsens, the Doctor and Romana are forced to separate, with Romana trying to find a way to contain the interdimensional creatures in the hold, while the Doctor attempts to locate the source of the virus. He discovers that the drugs that Rigg and Fisk are transporting are the key to the interdimensional virus, and that they are responsible for the chaos on board the ship.

The Doctor must find a way to save the passengers and crew of the ship, while also exposing Rigg and Fisk's illegal activities. The situation reaches a climax when several of the interdimensional creatures are unleashed on the ship, and the Doctor must make a difficult decision to stop them in their tracks.

In the end, all of the passengers and crew, including Tryst and Dymond, are saved, while Rigg and Fisk are exposed and brought to justice. The Doctor and Romana depart in the TARDIS, having once again saved the day in a universe-threatening situation.

Overall, "Nightmare of Eden" is a classic Doctor Who episode, featuring interesting science fiction concepts, tension-filled subplots, and plenty of action and suspense. Fans of the show will appreciate the strong characterizations of the Doctor and Romana, as well as the excellent supporting cast, which includes some memorable characters. The episode also explores some darker themes related to drug trafficking and addiction, adding depth and complexity to the story.
