Doogie Howser, M.D. season 1 episode 13, "Doogie the Red-Nosed Reindeer," centers around the Christmas holiday season. Doogie is asked to work on Christmas Eve, which threatens to ruin his plans with his family. Meanwhile, Doogie's friend, Raymond, is in the hospital with a failing liver, and his only hope is a transplant. Doogie's father, who is also a doctor, cannot operate due to a conflict of interest.

As Christmas approaches, Doogie becomes increasingly agitated about having to work on such an important holiday. However, his personal frustrations take a back seat as he tries to help Raymond. Doogie and his father work to find a suitable donor, but their efforts prove fruitless.

Later, Doogie receives a call from a patient who has passed away, but whose organs are still viable for transplant. Doogie and his father agree that the patient's liver could be a match for Raymond and quickly arrange to perform the transplant. In the end, Raymond receives the liver, and Doogie is able to spend the rest of the holiday with his family.

The episode also features a subplot involving Doogie's colleague, Vinnie, who must navigate an awkward situation when his girlfriend buys him an extravagant gift, but he is unable to reciprocate due to financial constraints.
