Evolution of Evil Season 1 Episode 4 In Power

  • March 7, 2014

In Power, the fourth episode of the first season of Evolution of Evil, takes a closer look at the life and actions of Mobutu Sese Seko, the de facto ruler of the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) from 1965 to 1997.

Born in the Belgian Congo in 1930, Mobutu rose to power in the aftermath of the country's independence from Belgium in 1960. As a young journalist and military officer, he used his skills to gain favor with the country's first Prime Minister, Patrice Lumumba. However, when Lumumba was ousted in a military coup less than a year later, Mobutu played a crucial role in the new government and soon took control himself.

As president, Mobutu was initially seen as a hero by many in his country. He promoted African nationalism and vowed to rid the country of the remnants of its colonial past. He renamed the country, its cities, and its citizens in an effort to create a new, unified identity. He also nationalized many industries and promoted education and healthcare.

However, as time went on, Mobutu's regime became more corrupt and brutal. He surrounded himself with loyalists who received endless favors while the rest of the country lived in poverty. He stifled political dissent and eventually disbanded all political parties besides his own. He also created a cult of personality around himself, with billboards, statues, and songs glorifying his rule.

One of the most infamous aspects of Mobutu's regime was his network of spies and informants, known as the Service National d'Intelligence et de Protection (SNIP). The SNIP was tasked with maintaining order and tracking down dissidents, but it quickly became a tool for Mobutu to silence his enemies and enrich his supporters. The SNIP utilized tactics like torture, kidnapping, and assassination to achieve its goals.

Despite allegations of corruption and human rights abuses, Mobutu remained in power for over thirty years. However, in the 1990s, as the Cold War ended and international pressure mounted, he was forced to hold multiparty elections. When he lost to a political rival, Laurent-Désiré Kabila, Mobutu fled the country and died in exile soon after.

In Power paints a comprehensive picture of Mobutu and his regime, using archival footage, interviews with experts, and dramatizations of key moments in his life. It explores how someone who started as a young idealist could become such a ruthless dictator, and the devastating impact his rule had on the people of Congo.

Through the lens of Mobutu's life, In Power also examines broader themes of authoritarianism, corruption, and the nature of power. It asks tough questions about how individuals and societies can prevent the rise of tyrants like Mobutu, and what happens when they fail to do so.
