Forensic Files: Collection Season 1 Episode 24 Office Visit

  • January 22, 2010

In season 1 episode 24 of Forensic Files Collection, titled "Office Visit," viewers are taken on a journey through the investigation of the murder of a prominent dentist in a quiet, suburban Texas town. Using forensic evidence left at the crime scene, authorities worked to piece together the events leading up to the brutal killing in hopes of identifying the perpetrator.

The episode begins by introducing viewers to John Plotz, a well-respected dentist in Texarkana, Texas. On the morning of November 9, 1993, Plotz's dental assistant arrived at the office to find him lying motionless on the floor, surrounded by blood. Panicking, she quickly called the police.

After examining the body, investigators determined that Plotz had been bludgeoned to death with a heavy object, and had likely been asleep on the couch in his office when the attack occurred. There were no signs of forced entry, leading authorities to believe that the killer was someone who had access to the building or had been let in by Plotz himself.

Using advanced forensic techniques, detectives were able to recover several pieces of evidence from the crime scene, including blood spatter, hair and fibers, and a small piece of plastic. They sent the evidence to their lab for analysis, hoping that it would yield clues as to the identity of the person responsible for the murder.

As the investigation continued, detectives began to focus their attention on one of Plotz's former patients, a man named James Latham. Latham had been prescribed pain medication by Plotz in the past, and had recently been denied a prescription refill due to concerns that he was becoming addicted to the drugs.

Detectives believed that Latham may have been seeking revenge on Plotz by killing him. They obtained a search warrant for Latham's home and car, where they found a number of items that could be linked to the murder, including a pair of boots with blood stains on them and a sledgehammer with a strand of hair caught in the handle.

However, Latham had an alibi for the night of the murder, and the blood on his boots turned out to be his own, from an injury he had sustained a few days prior. Further analysis of the hair strand on the sledgehammer revealed that it did not match Plotz's genetic profile, ruling out Latham as a suspect.

With no other leads to follow, the investigation into Plotz's murder stalled for several years. However, in 1998, advances in DNA analysis led to a breakthrough in the case. Scientists were able to extract a DNA sample from a small piece of plastic found at the crime scene, and determine that it belonged to a young man named Mikey Wayne Miller.

Miller had no prior criminal record, but had been seen in the area on the night of the murder, and had been known to associate with drug users and other criminals. Detectives located Miller living in another state, and brought him in for questioning.

Miller denied having anything to do with Plotz's murder, but a search of his home revealed a number of tools that were consistent with the ones used in the crime, including a sledgehammer and a pry bar. They also found clothing with blood stains on them that matched Plotz's DNA, as well as a small plastic bag that contained more samples of the same DNA found on the plastic from the crime scene.

In light of this evidence, Miller was charged with Plotz's murder. At trial, the prosecution presented a compelling case, outlining the various pieces of evidence that linked Miller to the crime. The defense argued that the DNA evidence was not enough to conclusively prove Miller's guilt, and that there were other potential suspects who had not been investigated.

Ultimately, the jury found Miller guilty of first-degree murder, and he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case made headlines across the country, and served as an important reminder of the power of forensic science to bring criminals to justice.

"Office Visit" is a gripping and suspenseful episode that showcases the tireless work of forensic investigators and law enforcement officials in bringing a murderer to justice. Through careful analysis of forensic evidence and a relentless pursuit of the truth, they were able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Mikey Wayne Miller was responsible for the senseless killing of a beloved member of the community.
