  • November 12, 2010

In "Filtered Out," the 38th episode of season 1 of Forensic Files: Collection, viewers are taken on a journey through the investigation and eventual conviction of a California man who murdered his wife and then set their home on fire in an attempt to cover up the crime.

The episode begins with firefighters responding to a blaze at the home of Kevin and Liisa Hakala in San Juan Capistrano, California. Once the fire is extinguished, investigators discover Liisa's body in the bedroom. The doors and windows have been closed, and a note has been left behind that suggests Liisa may have committed suicide.

However, the evidence soon reveals that Liisa's death was not a suicide at all. Kevin's behavior on the day of the fire raises suspicion among investigators, and they begin to look deeper into his past. It is soon discovered that Kevin has a history of domestic violence, and Liisa was in the process of divorcing him. Along with this, investigators learned that Kevin had forged Liisa's will in an attempt to obtain her life insurance policy.

The forensic evidence collected at the scene also raises red flags for investigators, with tests revealing high levels of gasoline and other accelerants in the couple's bedroom. It also becomes clear that Kevin had tampered with a security camera system in the home, wiping out footage of the night of Liisa's murder.

As the investigation continues, forensic experts are able to piece together the events leading up to Liisa's death and the subsequent fire. Using various types of forensic evidence, they are able to conclusively prove that Kevin is the murderer and that he had tried to cover up his crime with the use of gasoline and the attempt to frame it as a suicide.

Finally, with all of the evidence against him, Kevin is brought to trial for the murder of his wife. The forensic evidence presented in court seals his fate, and he is found guilty and sent to prison.

Overall, "Filtered Out" is a compelling look at the use of forensic science in solving a complex murder case. It showcases the painstaking work of investigators and forensic experts as they carefully gather evidence and build a case against a killer. It also serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive issue of domestic violence and the need for society to take this issue seriously and provide appropriate resources and support for victims.
