- March 21, 2017
The show Forged in Fire: Cutting Deeper takes the audience through the journey of four bladesmiths as they go head-to-head in a series of challenges to create some of the world's most iconic edged weapons. In season 1 episode 11, titled "The Naginata", the contestants are tasked with forging a double-edged Japanese pole weapon, known as the Naginata.
The episode begins with the bladesmiths meeting with host Wil Willis and judges David Baker and Doug Marcaida, who introduce them to the history and significance of the Naginata. Originally used by Japanese samurai, the Naginata was a versatile weapon that could be used for both offensive and defensive purposes. The bladesmiths are then given three hours to create a Naginata blade of their own design, using only traditional forging techniques.
After the initial forging round, two bladesmiths are eliminated, leaving the remaining two to move on to the next round. In this round, they are given four hours to complete their Naginata by adding a handle and other necessary parts. This involves precise calculations and careful consideration of the balance and weight of the weapon.
As the contestants work on their final weapons, tensions run high. The judges make their rounds, inspecting the blades for quality and balance. The contestants sweat it out, knowing that the slightest mistake could mean the difference between winning and losing.
Finally, the time is up, and the bladesmiths present their finished Naginatas to the judges. The weapons are tested for sharpness, durability, and overall effectiveness. The judges analyze the craftsmanship of the blades, evaluating each one based on their own personal criteria.
In the end, only one bladesmith will be crowned the champion of "The Naginata" episode. But regardless of who wins, all of the contestants can take pride in the fact that they have tested their skills against some of the best bladesmiths in the world, and have pushed themselves to their limits to create a truly iconic weapon.
