Comedy Central's hilarious Free Radio mockumentary moves fluidly between script and improv, farce-like regulars and real-life stars playing themselves. As with all successful improv, you have a fictional backdrop against which the comedy plays out in all its variety. A feckless young man, Lance (played by Lance Krall), who has been working as an intern at Los Angeles radio station KBOM, is suddenly given his chance when a popular host resigns. Lance is utterly inept at being a radio host; he has no social graces, does not listen well, and shows little empathy with others. Yet his interview show succeeds with listeners, presumably because of its sheer ineptitude. Lance is joined by a buxom co-host, Anna (played by Anna Vocino), who runs interference, plays straight man, and generally facilitates Lance's silly interviews. Other characters in the plot include James (Brian Huskey), Lance's boss; Sarah (Sarah Baker), the radio station's receptionist; and Bling Bling (Gerry Bednob), Lance's agent. Each 30-minute episode displays the improv talents of the cast, as Lance interviews a celebrity of the day. The celebrities on the show play themselves, so much of the humor results from their responses as Lance hurls one outrageous, insulting, or irrelevant question after another their way.
