Gintama takes place in the Edo era of Edo, Japan, which has been surpisingly been taken over by these strange aliens known as, the Sky People. From there, the series focuses on a young teenager named Ginboki Sakata, who is quite an eccentric samurai. He helps out another teenager by the name of, Shinpachi Shimura, who is trying to rescue his sister from an intimidating group of aliens that wish to make her join a brothel. After Gintoki hears of this, he automatically makes Shinpachi his freelance apprentice, so that Shinpachi can afford the rent.

Afterwards, they then rescue an alien girl named Kagura, who works with the Yakuza. She wishes to be able to use her superhuman strength to destroy her enemies. At thus point, the three freelance samurai warriors take on odd jobs which involve many tough and messed up criminals.

The main character, Gintoki can become very rude at times, but his character seems to be somewhat careless and apathetic to life and his surroundings. For the most part, he can be a kind person at times, as well as very quiet. Gintama not only has a unique and elaborate story, but it also includes a wide variety of many different characters who are extremely unique and extremely likable.

  • The Shinsengumi attempt to save Tetsunosuke from the Check It Out gang, but the Mimawarigumi stands in the way. Neither side is willing to back down, but Gintoki, who had infiltrated the gang as a Mimawarigumi spy, manages to save Tetsunosuke! Kondo orders the Shinsengumi to begin fighting back!

  • Tetsunosuke has been ordered to deliver a letter for Hijikata. However, he's captured by the radical Joi Check It Out gang in the process. Tetsunosuke had concealed his identity to join the gang, but now they know that he has connections to the police. He's taken hostage as leverage over the Shinsengumi and Mimawarigumi. However, the Mimawarigumi shows no concern for the hostage and plots to place the blame squarely on the Shinsengumi. Hijikata and the other members are enraged after learning Isaburo's plans. The Shinsengumi and Mimawarigumi are now in an all-out fight.

  • Tetsunosuke has completely changed as he sincerely tries to perform his new job. Isaburo despises Tetsunosuke and tells Hijikata that he should dispose of him, but Hijikata, who came from a similar background, sympathizes with Tetsunosuke and looks after him. Meanwhile, Gintoki, who was arrested by the Mimawarigumi, has been assigned a mission by Isaburo...

  • The Sasaki family is as elite as it gets, and one of its members, Tetsunosuke, has joined the Shinsengumi. He would have joined the Mimawarigumi, a police force with pedigree, but he is considered a troublemaker, which is why he was sent to the Shinsengumi. Kondo assigns Tetsu to Hijikata as an assistant, so Hijikata is forced to endure the new recruit...

  • Jellybeans Vanguard Honda is on his fifth year as a Jump editor. However, he's been assigned to the manga Gintaman, which has driven multiple editors insane. In order to save himself, Honda must find a new talented artist so he can be reassigned. One day, he is visited by an aspiring manga artist by the name of N3016. Is this artist as juvenile as his name suggests?

  • The Madame's arrival is imminent. Kyoshiro, Gintoki, and friends attempt to scout some help, but they end up with a bunch of oddballs. And it turns out that Otae has invited guests from all over town who go wild and leave the bar and Kyoshiro broken! There's no time to worry about taking care of customers. But at the worst possible time, Madame Yagami arrives!

  • The number one host in the Kabuki district, Kyoshiro, summons the Odd Jobs members to his club, Takamagahara, and tells them that he intends to quit because of a lady named Madame Yagami who controls the night world. It seems that she declared she would be making a second visit to Takamagahara, which is essentially a death sentence. The hosts at Kyoshiro's have quit out of fear, so Gintoki and co must find hosts to handle the Madame...

  • After getting drunk at the year-end party, Gintoki managed to become a six-timer in one night. In order to prevent the show from being pulled off the air, Gintoki is forced into engaging in a relationship with all of them. And now he has to go on dates with all of them at the same time...!

  • It's a year-end party at Odd Jobs! The Gintama anime has been through a lot, but Gintoki tells Kagura and Shinpachi to keep it cool. And then the usual members join in for some real partying... The next morning, Gintoki wakes up to discover that he's made some very bad mistakes. Will Gin-san be able to survive the worst blunder in five years of Gintama!?

  • The Shinsengumi is tricked into escorting the Shogun on his first snowboarding trip. Then they run into the Odd Jobs members. Yada yada, everybody's stranded in the middle of the mountains, plus the Shogun is missing. Hijikata orders a search for the Shogun while securing warm shelter.

  • Matsudaira forces the Shinsengumi to take a vacation to the ski slopes. He tells them to enjoy their time off, but in reality, they've been sent to guard the Shogun on his first snowboard trip. The Shinsengumi members are doing their best to protect the Shogun since their lives are on the line, but then they run into some familiar faces...

  • Gintoki and co have launched in the Galactic Merchant Fleet Robot Kaien to take out Dark Vader. Having made peace with the Renho, they now fight for their pride as Earthlings and samurai against Dark Vader, who has become one with the Renho home planet. Will they be able to restore peace to the universe?

  • Gintoki and Sakamoto reveal themselves and attack the Double Dragon generals. Meanwhile, Elizabeth has launched in the Gunsam to battle Dark Vader in a duel to the death. Elizabeth is helpless against Dark Vader. That is when Katsura arrives to protect his friend's back!

  • Odd Jobs, Katsura, and Sakamoto disguise themselves as Renho to join Fumiko in infiltrating the enemy base. Dark Vader, feared by all as the evil lord, plans to use the Renho's anti-samurai Gunsams to attack while the people of Earth are distracted by the rain. Gintoki and the others must stop the invasion of Earth before it's too late, but instead they appear to be bonding with the Renho. That is when Elizabeth, General Eren, appears!

  • Katsura and the Odd Jobs members learn the truth about Elizabeth's disappearance from his former lover, Fumiko. He was actually a spy from the legendary mercenary tribe, the Renho. Fumiko asks them to protect Earth and Elizabeth from the Renho. Meanwhile, a strange rain is turning the faces of the people of Edo with Elizabeth faces who can only communicate with signs! The invasion of the Renho army has begun.

  • Elizabeth vanishes, leaving behind a sign that says "Don't look." Katsura asks Odd Jobs to help look for him, but then he remembers that it's been a year since he last saw Elizabeth. He never even realized that Elizabeth had left home! They decide to go to Katsura's home to search for clues.

  • Odd Jobs attends the funeral for the owner of the restaurant they frequented. A few Shinsengumi members are also present. Gintoki and Hijikata, known for their bizarre sense of taste, lament the loss of one of Edo's treasures... As the funeral proceeds, the dead owner suddenly makes a move!! Only Gintoki and Hijikata can see him... But when they try to escape from the owner...

  • Kagura begs Gintoki for a cell phone, but the tight Odd Jobs budget won't allow for one. That's when they discover three cell phones in Sadaharu's poop! They immediately have the technical whiz Gengai fix the phones and each member gets one. Kagura is ecstatic to have a cell phone, but Gintoki and Shinpachi are annoyed by her incessant texting...

  • Gintoki is participating in the My Wife World Tournament so he can cure Shinpachi of his addiction to the romance simulation game Love Choris. The tournament involves in-game dates with the heroines. In the Momo group, Shinpachi uses a passive approach to dominate the other players!

  • Shinpachi introduces his new girlfriend to Otae...but she turns out to be Momo-san, a character from the popular Love Choris game. There are more and more boys in Edo who can no longer distinguish game from reality like Shinpachi. Otae asks Gintoki to bring Shinpachi back to the real world. The only way is by entering the world of Love Choris and talking some sense into him. Gintoki ends up choosing a very unique heroine to be his girlfriend...

  • This episode is a sidestory! Gintama has been involved in many (one-sided) crossovers. This time, they're working with the Jump comedy manga Sket Dance! An episodic anime that airs on Thursdays at 6 PM about a group of three odd jobbers with plenty of laughs and tears... Sounds very similar to Gintama. As Gintoki warns that the Sket Dan is coming after Gintama, the Sket Dan members appear and offer a challenge!

  • Gintoki was thrown in prison after being framed, and while he's made an enemy of the warden, he's managed to become the boss of the prisoners. With his underling Shachi in tow, Gintoki skips his menial labor duties to search the warden's room for anything incriminating. Understanding that the punishment will be fatal if they are caught, Gintoki disguises himself by putting on pajamas...

  • Odd jobs gets a request to collect money from a customer that hasn't paid his bill. They prepare to take this customer who is said to show up in a prison guard uniform into custody. However, Gintoki ends up being the one who is taken into custody. The customer turned out to be a real prison guard! His name is Kuzunosuke Beri, and there is no law or justice in his prison...

  • Gintoki tries to sell a broken VHS deck at a recycle shop, and he's lucky enough to be able to trade it for a modern Blu-ray player. However, there's a disc stuck inside...and it's a cursed Blu-ray. Gintoki gets scared and tries to return the player, but he accidentally pushes the disc into the machine. The TV screen is covered in static, and then a woman appears!

  • Commissioner Katakuriko Matsudaira stands atop the Edo police organization. Known as the Destroyer, Matsudaira is the most feared foe of Katsura's Joi patriots. Katsura disguises himself as Ezurako the maid to infiltrate Matsudaira's home in search of a scandal. Instead, he finds a father who doesn't belong in his own home.

  • Gin, Kondo, Hijkata, and Shin are stuck in the public bath with the demons. Every lie they tell digs their grave deeper. Can they really get away with kicking heads in, ripping off horns, and setting demons on fire with soap?

He urges them to leave this town, now that they've lost their home...Finally, the day comes for them to leave Snack Otose.

  • Pirako has double crossed Gin! Her real plan is to help Jirocho, her father, take over the town. Can Gin stop a war?

  • Pirako Chin is looking for the strongest man in the Kabuki District. Now Gintoki has an underling who wants to turn Kabuki District into a garden of bright red flowers.

Gintoki reluctantly buys Sa-chan a new pair of glasses, but they're bottle bottom glasses that are clearly the wrong prescription. Sa-chan is overjoyed that Gintoki has given her a present, but the new glasses are responsible for a chain of failures on her assassination job. Her superiors now question her commitment and her life is in danger!

  • Catherine apparently has a boyfriend... Gintoki finds it hard to believe, but he's visibly disturbed when he sees how love has drastically improved her appearance. Her boyfriend is a regular at Snack Otose, an entrepreneur by the name of Suejiro. Catherine decides to leave the Kabuki district to start a new bar with him... However, Otose doesn't give them her blessing, instead saying, "I feel a lot better knowing that I won't have to see your face again!" Finally, the day of departure arrives...

  • Yamazaki has a mental breakdown cause of Anpans and Kondo finally gets a date (Or does he!)

  • "Everyone looks pretty grown-up after summer break"Shinpachi finds himself in stuck in a completely different world. That is when the Shinsengumi sends a berserk Yamazaki to pick up the bewildered Shinpachi.

  • Shinpachi Shimura returns to the Yorozuya and discovers his friends drastically changed during the break. Feeling left behind, he returns home and discovers his sister, Tae Shimura, engaged to Isao Kondo. Tae and Kando enlists Shinpachi into the Shinsengumi and reveals that Tae is pregnant. Shinpachi runs to the ocean and laments the sudden change of those around him. There, he learns about Kyubei Yagyu's sex change to modify her life. They are interrupted by and Kotaro Katsura who also changed his genre due to his Kyubei's characters similarities.
