Gintama Season 1 Episode 101 Episode 101 - "Rules Are Made to be Broken"

  • December 22, 2008

As the title suggests, in Episode 101 of Gintama's first season, "Rules Are Made to be Broken", our main characters once again find themselves in a bit of a tricky situation. The episode starts with Gintoki and Shinpachi discussing the new rules that the government has implemented, which have made their work as samurai-for-hire nearly impossible. They cannot earn as much as they used to and have been forced to let go of their staff, Kagura, due to lack of funds.

But as luck would have it, the Yorozuya gang gets a new case that pays well, and while on their way to the client's office, they spot a group of motorcycle riders breaking traffic rules. Gintoki decides to intervene and stop them, but this only leads to a chase that results in the destruction of their client's office. To make up for their mistake, the Yorozuya agrees to rebuild the office, but this only ends up being the start of their troubles.

Their client, Mr. Yagyu, is the leader of a rich and influential family, and he has a strange request that could make or break their reputation. He wants them to pretend to be his family members for a week so that he can retire and live a peaceful life without his demanding children and annoying wife. In return, he agrees to pay them enough money to cover the expenses of rebuilding his office and to give them a bonus, making it an offer they cannot refuse.

Gintoki, Shinpachi, and Kagura agree to this unusual proposal and start living in the Yagyu household. However, it doesn't take long for them to realize that the Yagyu family has some secrets and issues they need to resolve. Shinpachi has to act as the daughter, while Kagura takes the role of the eldest son, and Gintoki occasionally fills in as the husband when Mr. Yagyu wants to avoid his wife's nagging.

Throughout the week they spend with the Yagyu family, the Yorozuya members see the harsh reality of a wealthy and influential family. They learn that people with power often have many hidden aspects to their lives that the public isn't aware of. For example, Mr. Yagyu's children, who seem to be perfect in public, are actually very selfish and only care about their own inheritance, and his wife is a beauty-obsessed woman who completely ignores her family.

By the end of the week, Gintoki, Shinpachi, and Kagura have seen too much of the Yagyu family's flaws and become disgusted with them. Gintoki decides to break the rules they were given and tells the children off, saying that they should be grateful for what they have. The group then proceeds to teach the family members a lesson that they will not forget anytime soon.

"Rules Are Made to be Broken" is one of the many episodes of Gintama that highlight the main character's subtle but amusing personalities. The episode showcases the Yorozuya's wit and humor while also addressing issues related to societal expectations. It's a classic example of the show's ability to balance humor and emotion and is a must-watch for any Gintama fan.
