Gintama Season 1 Episode 120 Episode 120 - "Japanese Restaurants Abroad Taste Pretty Much like School Cafeteria Lunches" / "Once You've Chosen a Dish, You Can't Give it Back"
- July 14, 2009
As the title suggests, Episode 120 of Gintama focuses on food and introduces a new character who loves dining out. The episode begins with the guys sitting at their usual spot at the Yorozuya office, discussing their current lack of funds and how they can save money. Just then, a client shows up requesting their help in finding a girl who ran away from home. They accept the job and head out to find her.
However, as they search for the girl, they stumble across a Japanese restaurant run by a man named Kousaka. Kousaka is a huge fan of Gintoki's favorite restaurant, which just so happens to be closed for a few days. He begs the guys to try his restaurant, promising that his Japanese cuisine is just as good as the original.
The guys reluctantly agree to try the food, and to their surprise, it's terrible. In fact, it tastes like a school cafeteria lunch. However, they don't want to hurt Kousaka's feelings so they force themselves to eat the food in silence. Kousaka notices that they aren't enjoying the food and asks them for feedback, but they are too polite to tell the truth. Later that evening, Kousaka runs into the Yorozuya at a local bar and drunkenly begs them for their honest opinion. The guys finally break down and tell him the truth about the food. However, instead of getting angry, Kousaka thanks them and heads back to his restaurant to learn how to improve the menu.
Meanwhile, the guys finally find the missing girl and return her home safely. However, Gin-san ends up getting paid in food instead of money, much to his dissatisfaction. This leads to a conversation about the importance of being honest with yourself and with others, especially when it comes to food.
The second half of the episode centers around a new character named Elizabeth, who is looking for a place to eat. She comes across a restaurant run by a man named Jii, who offers her a special dish. However, once she's chosen the dish, she can't give it back, no matter what it is. Elizabeth is hesitant, but decides to take a chance and chooses the dish. At first, she loves it, but then she realizes that the dish is actually a hot pot made from human remains. Disgusted, she tries to leave but Jii won't let her go until she pays for the dish.
The Yorozuya shows up just in time to rescue Elizabeth and put an end to Jii's shady business practices. Gin-san gives Jii a stern lecture about respecting his customers and not deceiving them, and Jii reluctantly agrees to shut down his restaurant.
All in all, Episode 120 of Gintama is a hilarious and thought-provoking episode that explores the importance of honesty, both in day-to-day interactions and when it comes to food. It's a must-watch for fans of the show who love silly humor and heartwarming moments.
