Cassandra "Cassie" Nightingale continues to settle into her new hometown in the second episode of the first season of Good Witch, entitled "Something Wicked." The youthful and ethereal town mayor is preparing for the impending Fall Festival, which she intends to be the event that puts her new town on the map and casts a magical glow on the community. In the midst of her event planning, Cassie notices a foul energy around Gray House, the residence she recently inherited from her grandmother. She seeks the help of her new friend and neighbor Chief of Police Jake Russell for assistance in investigating the strange presence in her home. As they explore the house, they notice that there are endless archways and corridors, and a staircase that ascends to nowhere, meaning that the house is far more extensive than it initially appears to be.
Meanwhile, the city is busy making arrangements for the Fall Festival, and Grace Russell, the chief's daughter, and a new student in town, finds herself drawn to the town's oddness. Grace uncovers an intriguing local legend about a bride who vanished on her wedding day that may have cursed the city. When the young girl discovers that her stepsister is about to marry a man from the same church where the mysterious bride married, she is convinced that the curse will cause a disastrous event. Grace contacts Cassie and shares her theory about the curse, but Cassie reassures the young girl that the community is far too magical, with incredible residents, to be under a curse and promises to help make the wedding day a true manifestation of love and happiness.
As the city prepares for the festival, a homeless man arrives in town, looking for his son, who he claims was taken away by the public! The man is convinced that a witch in this new city took his child away due to his powers. Cassie is moved by the despondent man and takes an instant liking to him. She uses her uncanny intuition to help him realize that there is no witch in the town, and that the people here are just warm and loving.
The festival promises to be an event that leaves an everlasting impression on the community, with Cassie organizing a ghost story telling contest that features the town's most distinctive and most prominent ghosts and spirits, among them; a witch who sailed the sea in a shoe, an elf who called a tree home, and a mermaid who stirred up a storm and sank ships. Despite the family fun and community gatherings, however, some feel the presence of something dark looming near Gray House, and the source lurks closer than anyone thinks!
In conclusion, "Something Wicked" is a magical episode of Good Witch that goes above and beyond to encapsulate the mystical and supernatural charm of the show. Cassie Nightingale is a captivating protagonist who is enjoyable to watch as she navigates her way through the strange happenings in her new home. The stellar casting, well-presented storyline, and palpable characterization of the supporting cast make this series a definite must-watch for lovers of romance, supernatural, and mystery genres.
