When George Murray proposes to Jane Gardner he doesn't suspect that Jane will refuse him. He hopes that Jane has gotten over her earlier heartbreak but finds out she hasn't. Brokenhearted he drives home and gets into a car accident. The force of the impact sends him back 10 years to correct the incident that drove Jane from him.
