Hand Maid May is a Japanese anime series that follows the life of a young man named Kazuya Saotome, who is a college student and a genius when it comes to computers. Kazuya's life changes drastically when he orders a robotic maid from Cyberdyne Corporation to do his housekeeping. The maid, named May, is a tiny computer with a charming personality. The show is a mix of comedy, romance, and science fiction.

Season 1 episode 2 of Hand Maid May is titled "Am I Being Helpful?" and it begins with Kazuya trying to use May to help him study for his exams. Despite her best efforts, May's limited knowledge of academic subjects proves to be a hindrance. Meanwhile, Kazuya's neighbor, Nanbara, has also ordered a robotic maid from Cyberdyne Corporation. Her maid, named Sara, is much more advanced and efficient than May.

Kazuya becomes jealous of Nanbara's maid and begins to feel insecure about May's abilities. He expresses his frustration to Chi, his childhood friend and neighbor who has a crush on him. Chi suggests that Kazuya ask the Cyberdyne Corporation to upgrade May's software.

Kazuya contacts the Cyberdyne Corporation, but they inform him that they no longer make the model of May he purchased. They do offer to send a technician to assess May's software and make any necessary updates. Kazuya agrees and the technician arrives the next day.

The technician, named Iiran, is loud and obnoxious, which frustrates Kazuya. Furthermore, Iiran's diagnostic tests reveal that there is nothing wrong with May's software and it is operating at maximum capacity. This is a relief to Kazuya, but he still feels inferior to Nanbara's maid.

One day, May overhears Kazuya's conversation with Nanbara about how advanced Sara is. Distraught, May sets off to prove her worth and help Kazuya. She goes on a cleaning rampage around the apartment, impressing Kazuya with her enthusiasm and dedication. However, her unbridled energy causes chaos and destruction all around, leading Kazuya to feel guilty for driving her to overwork herself.

In the end, Kazuya realizes that May is more than just a machine and that her personality and quirkiness are what make her special. He embraces her for who she is and promises to be a better owner to her. May, happy to have fulfilled her duties, falls asleep with a smile on her face.

"Am I Being Helpful?" explores the themes of self-worth and insecurity, highlighting the importance of appreciating others for who they are, rather than what they can do. The episode also showcases the dynamic between Kazuya and May, emphasizing the significance of their relationship as more than just an owner and his maid. It's a heartwarming episode that delivers laughs, emotions, and some action.
